Vecna crashing into DbD's asymmetric horror loop is as good as it sounds - four spells, magical loot chests, and bard survivors rolling d20s make this one of the freshest chapters in years.

I've put a lot of hours into Dead by Daylight across its decade-long run, and the formula can start to feel like muscle memory after a while - gen, chase, hook, repeat. The Dungeons and Dragons chapter, released in June 2024, is one of the more honest attempts at shaking that loop up from the inside. The killer is Vecna, the archlich D&D players have feared since the 1970s, and Behaviour nailed the fantasy-horror translation in a way that doesn't feel like a costume-swap. Vecna's core mechanic, Vile Darkness, gives him a four-spell rotation that you cycle mid-chase. Fly lets him clear pallets and windows entirely by soaring over them for a few seconds. Flight of the Damned sends five spectral entities through walls to punish survivors hiding behind cover. Mage Hand can lift a dropped pallet or block a standing one. The Displacer Sphere reveals survivors and temporarily disables their Magic Items. That last word matters: Vecna spawns treasure chests across the map containing Boots and Gauntlets that survivors can equip, with each item triggering a counter-effect whenever Vecna casts the corresponding spell. It creates a genuine risk-reward layer on the survivor side that goes beyond the usual flashlight-or-medkit binary. There is even a small chance of finding the Hand or Eye of Vecna in those chests, cursed items with high-risk, high-reward properties that the lore-aware will recognize immediately. The survivors are Aestri Yazar and Baermar Uraz, a pair of bards introduced as a "Survivor Collective" - two playable characters sold as one unit, a first for the game. Their perks lean into the D&D theming with real mechanical flavor. Bardic Inspiration has Aestri pull out a lute, roll a d20, and grant the result as a Skill Check bonus percentage to nearby survivors - a roll of 1 makes her scream (silently to the killer, thankfully). Mirrored Illusion lets her leave a magical decoy of herself near objectives to fool the killer mid-chase. These aren't gimmick perks; Bardic Inspiration in particular has earned genuine praise as one of the stronger teamplay options in the current meta. The free map, Forgotten Ruins, deserves a mention. It sits inside Vecna's dungeon tower with transport portals connecting the depths to a rooftop library. Visually it is one of the more striking maps in the game, and the layout feels considered rather than procedurally bland. Matthew Mercer voices Vecna, which is a detail that will mean a lot to a specific subset of players and nothing at all to anyone else - but it's a nice touch either way. Where this chapter is less exciting is in the context of the base game it sits inside. Dead by Daylight at ten years old carries a lot of mechanical debt - matchmaking variance, perk bloat, and a monetization structure that charges separately for most of its roster. If you are already fatigued with DbD, the D&D chapter adds novelty but does not restructure the experience. Vecna also has a real learning curve; the spell rotation reads simple on paper but managing all four cooldowns while tracking four survivors takes genuine practice before it clicks. New killers with high mechanical ceilings tend to feel weak on first contact, and Vecna is no exception. For anyone already in the DbD ecosystem, this is close to a straightforward recommendation. The mechanics are the most layered a single killer has brought in several chapters, the survivor perks are actually useful, and the map is free to everyone regardless of purchase. For newcomers, the Dungeons and Dragons Edition bundle that pairs the base game with this chapter is a reasonable entry point if the IP crossover is what drew you in. Alex, Scout Team

GamerScout Verdict

Strong pick for active DbD players - Vecna's spell kit and the Magic Item system add the most mechanical depth any single chapter has in years.

Every store in this table quotes us in euros, so the EUR figure is the price the seller actually set, not our arithmetic — which is why EUR is also the currency we rank in. We only list an offer here when the store gives us its price in euros, so nothing in this table is a number we invented.

Pick USD, PLN, GBP, CAD or AUD in the header and we convert from EUR at the European Central Bank reference rate — converted amounts are prefixed with ~. Your bank or the store may apply a different rate at checkout. We never hide offers based on where you are: everyone sees this whole table.

We may earn a commission when you buy games through links on this page — at no extra cost to you. It never affects our rankings or verdicts.
