If your reference point for company-level tactics is something like Steel Division or Wargame, recalibrate now. Combat Mission runs on WEGO, the alternating one-minute order-and-watch loop, and that single design choice changes everything about how you think. You are not reacting at 200 APM. You are writing a fire plan, committing to it, then watching sixty seconds of consequences you cannot undo. The British Army of the Rhine module drops you into that with Chieftain squadrons, Milan ATGM teams, FV432 mounts and Scorpion recon, against Soviet formations still built around massed armour and artillery. Spotting is modelled per crew and per optics, so an unspotted T-64 is genuinely invisible until it is not. The cost is the shell around it. The UI is a decade behind the simulation it fronts, the tutorial gives you almost nothing, and the 67 percent Steam score largely reflects people bouncing off the pathfinding and the module pricing structure rather than the tactics. Give it a weekend of reading the manual and the Quick Battle generator and scenario editor keep it alive for hundreds of hours. Skip it if you want polish. Buy it if you want the model.
