About Chasm: The Rift
The limb damage is the reason to play this. Shoot a soldier in the arm and the arm comes off, weapon and all. Take the head and it drops without one. In 1997 that was startling, and it still gives Chasm's combat a specificity most of its Quake-clone peers never bothered with. The Ukrainian-built engine backs it up with sprite-based enemies dropped into real 3D levels, which ages unevenly but keeps encounters readable. The rest is standard-issue mid-90s FPS: four time-period episodes, keycards, switch hunts, a boss at the end of each. Levels are cramped and maze-ish, the arsenal is functional rather than memorable, and the whole campaign is over in a handful of hours. The 2022 rerelease adds mouselook, widescreen and controller support, which are the only reasons it's playable at all now. Go in for the dismemberment and the era, not for level design that competes with Doom. It's a curiosity worth an afternoon, not a rediscovered classic.
