The 2009 blockbuster military shooter that defined a generation of online multiplayer. Still brutal, still loud, still kind of great.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is Infinity Ward's 2009 follow-up to the original Modern Warfare, and it arrived carrying expectations so heavy most games would have buckled under them. It didn't buckle. The single-player campaign is a relentless, setpiece-driven ride through a global conflict that escalates from covert ops in the mountains of Afghanistan to a full-scale ground war on American soil. It lasts roughly five to six hours, hits hard, and includes some of the most talked-about moments in shooter history - the infamous airport mission chief among them. If you want a tight, cinematic military action campaign with zero fat on it, this is still one of the better examples of the form. Multiplayer is where MW2 built its legend, and revisiting it now is a strange, fascinating experience. The perk system, killstreak rewards, and weapon unlocks that felt revolutionary in 2009 are still mechanically satisfying. Dual-wielding shotguns, Marathon-Lightweight-Commando knife builds, the Model 1887 - the loadout creativity here was wild in ways the series has never quite replicated. Whether the PC version's multiplayer population is alive enough to make this practical in the current moment is a genuine unknown; player counts have varied wildly over the years, and the absence of recent Steam reviews makes it hard to give a clean verdict on server health right now. The Special Ops co-op mode is the underappreciated middle child of the package. A set of standalone missions built from campaign geometry, playable solo or with a partner, ranging from straightforward gun runs to brutal stealth and time-trial challenges. It holds up better than you might expect, and if you can get a friend in, it gives the game a secondary life beyond campaign completion. What doesn't hold up as cleanly: the PC version had a famously rocky launch, ditching dedicated servers in favor of IWNet peer-to-peer matchmaking, which was controversial and limiting. Years of patches and community tools have softened some of those edges, but it was never the full-featured PC multiplayer experience some players expected. The campaign's story is also pure spectacle - coherent if you let it wash over you, confusing if you try to follow it closely. Treat it as an action movie, not a thriller, and you'll enjoy it more. For players who want to understand where modern shooters came from, or who grew up with this game and want a nostalgia hit, MW2 still delivers real value. The campaign is tight and propulsive. Special Ops gives co-op players something to chew on. Multiplayer is the question mark - go in with realistic expectations about population, and you might find active lobbies or you might find a ghost town depending on timing and region. It's a piece of shooter history that earned its Metacritic score, rough edges included. Alex, Scout Team
