I keep coming back to Black Ops III as the clearest example of Treyarch firing on most of its cylinders at once. The multiplayer is the obvious centrepiece: nine Specialists, each carrying a unique power weapon or ability that charges across a match, layer hero-shooter DNA over classic fast-twitch shooting. Wall-running and thrust-jumping open up map geometry in ways that reward players who learn the angles, and the map design itself - diverse sightlines, contested chokepoints, varied elevations - was widely praised as some of the best in the franchise at the time. It is a faster, more vertical game than the Black Ops entries before it, and if that kind of fluid, momentum-heavy movement clicks for you, the multiplayer loop is genuinely hard to put down. The Cybernetic Core system in the campaign gives single-player a distinct flavour too. Set in a dystopian 2065, you acquire implants that let you do things like hack enemy robots or exert mind control, switchable at armory stations scattered through each mission. The missions themselves are wider than older CoD levels, with multiple approach routes rather than a single corridor. The story, though, is where BO3 earns its Metacritic 73 honestly - it is convoluted, and the tone swings between grim sci-fi thriller and self-indulgent weirdness without fully committing to either. If you are here for narrative payoff, temper expectations. Zombies is the third pillar and arguably the one with the longest shelf life. The mode was reworked into a 1940s noir setting with voice work from Ron Perlman and Jeff Goldblum adding genuine personality. A new beast transformation power-up lets players tear through crowds, though in practice a solid shotgun tends to be more efficient. Beyond the shipped maps, Steam Workshop support means the community has kept producing custom Zombies maps for years - the modded content scene alone justifies the purchase for co-op fans willing to dig into it. The practical caveat for PC buyers in 2026: competitive multiplayer still has an active player base in the low thousands concurrently, but cheating and hacking in public lobbies is a recurring complaint in community discussions. Valve Anti-Cheat is active, but it has not fully solved the problem. Zombies, especially with friends and Workshop maps, is the safer bet if you want a consistently clean experience. The campaign supports four-player online co-op, which gives it replay value most CoD campaigns lack. Bottom line: the campaign is the weakest leg of a three-legged stool, but two of those legs - competitive multiplayer with its Specialist system and the endlessly remixed Zombies mode - remain worth the time. If your priority is solo story, look elsewhere. If you want a sci-fi shooter with room to run, both literally and in terms of content, BO3 still delivers.
