Ninety-three percent of over a thousand Steam players can't be wrong: this retro action-adventure nails a two-mode gameplay loop that most modern remakes fumble completely.

I want to be clear about what Blaster Master Zero actually is before you click anything: it is a reimagining of a 1988 NES cult classic, rebuilt from the ground up by Inti Creates, and it absolutely earns that 93% positive rating on Steam. The pitch sounds simple on paper but the execution is what gets you. You pilot the combat tank SOPHIA III through interconnected side-scrolling platformer levels, blasting mutants and hunting for upgrades that open up previously unreachable paths. Then, whenever Jason hops out of the tank and ducks into a cave entrance, the camera flips to a top-down perspective and the game becomes a completely different animal: a dungeon-crawling shooter where you manage weapon levels, avoid environmental hazards, and fight bizarre mutant bosses in sealed arenas you cannot exit until everything is dead. Two tightly distinct modes, one cohesive world. That gear-shift between piloting a tank and being a tiny, fragile dude on foot never gets old. The Metroidvania bones underneath this are solid. SOPHIA gains new weapons and traversal abilities that gate off sections of the map, so backtracking feels purposeful rather than punishing. Tank controls have a satisfying weight to them without becoming clumsy, and the platforming is fair even near the end where the difficulty ramps up meaningfully. Jason's on-foot sections have one genuine friction point worth knowing about: taking a hit strips a weapon level, meaning your best gun modes can go unavailable mid-fight if you play sloppily, and swapping weapons mid-combat requires a menu pause that interrupts the flow. It is a faithful nod to the original design, but it will annoy players who expect modern streamlined controls. Post-launch free updates added substantial replay hooks. Destroyer Mode, unlocked after clearing the main campaign, is a legitimate hard mode: enemies resist specific weapon levels in the top-down dungeons, bosses get altered attack patterns and boosted health, and healing items are stripped of their effect. Boss Blaster Mode lets you fight every boss and mid-boss back to back for time attack purposes. EX Character Mode lets you replay the whole game as guest characters from the Gunvolt universe, each with their own abilities and resource systems rather than just being reskins of Jason. That is a lot of content for what started as a single-game package. Visually, Inti Creates committed fully to the 8-bit aesthetic without it feeling like a lazy filter slapped on modern assets. The chiptune soundtrack is genuinely good. Anyone allergic to pixel art or retro pacing should look elsewhere, but if you respect the craft of that era and want it rebuilt with tighter design decisions, this delivers. The co-op multiplayer, where a second player controls an aiming reticle to provide supporting fire, is more of a novelty than a full co-op experience, so do not let that feature drive your purchase decision. GamerScout Verdict

Built for retro-action fans who want a tight Metroidvania loop and have the patience to manage a weapon-level system that punishes sloppy play.

Every store in this table quotes us in euros, so the EUR figure is the price the seller actually set, not our arithmetic — which is why EUR is also the currency we rank in. We only list an offer here when the store gives us its price in euros, so nothing in this table is a number we invented.

Pick USD, PLN, GBP, CAD or AUD in the header and we convert from EUR at the European Central Bank reference rate — converted amounts are prefixed with ~. Your bank or the store may apply a different rate at checkout. We never hide offers based on where you are: everyone sees this whole table.

We may earn a commission when you buy games through links on this page — at no extra cost to you. It never affects our rankings or verdicts.
