Five distinct characters, simple move sets, and the kind of frantic energy that works best when your friend is sitting three feet away yelling about cheap knockbacks. The pixel art has charm, and split-screen co-op is exactly what you'd want from a 2016 indie brawler. The catch is that the online multiplayer never quite gelled with the community, and the game's population reflects that. Playing solo or offline is where Bell Ringer finds its footing. If you're hunting a no-frills local party fighter and your tolerance for "mostly negative" reviews is high enough to look past bandwagon scoring, there's a competent game here. Just know it's built for friends in the same room, not matchmaking queues.
