Conquest drops up to 128 players onto massive maps where teams fight for control of sectors rather than individual flags, spreading the chaos across wider ground than older entries dared to attempt. Breakthrough is arguably the better mode for structured play, one team attacks a sequence of sectors, the other defends, and the 128-player count means every lane stays contested. The Plus System adds a mid-match attachment swap mechanic, letting you flip between a close-range sight and a longer scope on the fly without being locked to a pre-set loadout. It sounds small but it meaningfully changes how gunfights play out across maps that shift from open-field sniping to tight-corridor brawling. Specialists replaced the classic class system at launch, and while later updates walked that back by integrating class roles into the Specialist structure, the compromise still leaves some veterans cold. Mobility standouts like Mackay's grappling hook and Sundance's wingsuit inject vertical movement that earlier entries lacked, and both are genuinely fun to use. Battlefield Portal is where 2042 quietly does something interesting. It pulls weapons, vehicles, classes, and maps from Battlefield 1942, Bad Company 2, and Battlefield 3, letting players run those classic rulesets through a modern engine. Running Bad Company 2's Rush on a remastered Valparaiso with current-gen visuals is the kind of nostalgia hit that holds up even when the main game frustrates.
