About Attack Helicopter Dating Simulator
I cover strategy and sim games for a living, so when the Scout Team handed me a military-themed title called Attack Helicopter Dating Simulator, I assumed I was being hazed. Then I sat down with it for a session and came out the other side with something resembling a verdict. This is a visual novel first and a dating sim second, built entirely around a single internet meme premise, and it is more self-aware about that fact than most joke games dare to be. The setup drops you into the Attack Helicopter Academy, where you are, yes, an attack helicopter attending school alongside an all-female roster of other rotary-wing aircraft. Each classmate gets a stats screen on first meeting that reads out real weapons loadouts, rotor specifications, and armor ratings for craft like the AH-1Z Viper, the UH-64 Apache, the Mil MI-24, and the Kamov Ka-50 Black Shark. That detail is genuinely charming and does more world-building work than anything in the dialogue. The writing uses military framing as the comedic engine throughout: going on a date is called going on a mission, romance escalates through aerial strafing runs, and the tone keeps a straight face just long enough for the jokes to land before winking at the camera. The comedic timing on the background music cues, in particular, works better than it has any right to. Structurally, though, the simulation label is overselling things. Player choices are narrow and the story rails you toward one of eleven endings regardless of most decisions you make. Save-scumming is fully supported, so completionists can brute-force every branch in a single sitting. The backgrounds are stock photos run through a filter, the music loops aggressively, and community feedback is consistent that the opening character introductions are the comedic peak, with the middle hours losing momentum. The premise carries the premise, which is both its hook and its ceiling. From a production standpoint, Curse Box Studios is a small Uruguayan indie outfit and this shows. There is no voice acting, no animated sprites, and the visual novel engine is bare-bones. What saves it is that the writing staff clearly understood the assignment: the meme origin is acknowledged, skewered, and then turned into something that at minimum passes as a complete story with actual branching variables. The eleven endings have enough variation in their conditions to reward a second or third playthrough if you care about seeing the full picture. The audience for this is specific. If you have played Hatoful Boyfriend and want something in that lineage but shorter and cheaper, this scratches a related itch. If you want meaningful player agency, a gripping romance arc, or production values above the micro-indie floor, look elsewhere. There is no mod ecosystem, no difficulty curve, no AI to analyze. The decision-making depth I normally care about is almost entirely absent. What is here is a short, occasionally funny, fully committed absurdist visual novel that earned its overwhelmingly positive user score on charm alone, and then had a messy publisher dispute that briefly took it off Steam. The current version on Steam appears recovered and updated by the original developers. Diego, Scout Team
