The strategic hook is choosing a faction from the start: the Tycoons (Global Trust) prioritize raw industrial output at the cost of ecological damage, the Ecos (Eden Initiative) lean on wind energy and green tech for cleaner but less efficient production chains, and the Techs (S.A.A.T.) act as a neutral research-heavy wildcard that unlocks high-end upgrades neither of the other two can reach alone. That three-way tension shapes every session, because your faction choice dictates which production chains you can run, which NPCs will trade with you, and how your island ecosystem responds over time. The core loop will be immediately familiar to anyone who has touched Anno 1404 or the later Anno 1800: settle an island, supply housing tiers with increasingly complex goods, expand to secondary islands when local resources run dry, and automate trade routes to keep everything balanced. What makes 2070 interesting mechanically is the underwater layer. Subaquatic platforms, deep-sea mines, and ocean-floor production sites open up a second spatial plane that forces you to think vertically as well as horizontally. Mastering trade routes is not optional here - the moment you outgrow your starting island, the entire economy hinges on cargo haulers running clean supply lines between your surface cities and those undersea outposts. Research also plays a big role: Tech faction buildings and the shared research council let you permanently buff production efficiency, but because the results carry a random element, you will sometimes grind for upgrades longer than feels fair. The campaign deserves honesty: it functions more as an extended tutorial than a proper narrative. Voice acting is weak, mission objectives occasionally obscure their requirements, and the pacing drags. The place where Anno 2070 actually shines is continuous play and the single-mission mode with its random-seed maps, where you set your own victory conditions and just build. Multiplayer exists and supports cooperative island economies, which is genuinely clever, but the online population is thin in 2026 and you should treat that mode as a bonus rather than a selling point. Now, the elephant in every Anno 2070 discussion: Ubisoft Connect. The original launch required always-on DRM that burned through activation limits when hardware changed, which sparked justified outrage. The good news is that the SolidShield activation limit system was fully removed in July 2020, and the always-online requirement was patched out years before that. The Mixed score on Steam reflects a game that was genuinely hostile to legitimate buyers for years. That situation has materially improved. Connecting via Ubisoft Connect still adds a layer of friction at startup, but it is no longer the nightmare it once was. Expect the occasional login hiccup on older hardware configurations, but not a showstopper. For strategy and sim players who have already cleared Anno 1800 and want to trace the lineage backwards, or for newcomers who want a cheaper entry point into the series, the Complete Edition is the right version to get. All ten DLC packs covering the Eco, Tycoon, and Tech content expansions are included, which rounds out the building palette considerably. The learning curve is real and the tutorial under-explains trade route optimization, so budget time for community wikis. But anyone willing to sit with production spreadsheets will find a game that rewards the investment with sessions that vanish hours without warning.
