Alex Hunter: Lord of the Mind Platinum Edition

What this one asks for up front is tolerance: a leisurely first hour of scene-setting, a lot of clicking through cluttered rooms, and a willingness to accept that a detective story about a missing professor will take its time before revealing where it is actually going. Give it that, and the payoff is a compact, tidy hidden-object adventure with more atmosphere than its casual-portal origins suggest. The mind-control conspiracy Alex stumbles into gives the object hunts a reason to exist, and the environments have a hand-painted heaviness (dim studies, rain-smeared streets) that a lot of point-and-click contemporaries never bothered with. What it does not do is surprise you mechanically. The puzzle interludes between hidden-object scenes are the usual sliders and lock combinations, and the hint system is generous enough that you will rarely be stuck long enough to feel clever. But it knows its length, ends before the premise wears thin, and the Platinum Edition's bonus chapter is a real epilogue rather than padding. For a single-player evening with a decent score playing under it, that restraint counts for something.
