Age of Wonders 4: Secrets of the Archmages
A niche expansion that adds astral-plane campaigns and new spellcasting mechanics, but only if you already own Age of Wonders 4 and want more late-game content to min-max.
GamerScout Verdict
Solid for veterans already invested in AoW4's late-game theory-crafting, but don't buy this as your entry point to the series.

Every store in this table quotes us in euros, so the EUR figure is the price the seller actually set, not our arithmetic — which is why EUR is also the currency we rank in. We only list an offer here when the store gives us its price in euros, so nothing in this table is a number we invented.
Pick USD, PLN, GBP, CAD or AUD in the header and we convert from EUR at the European Central Bank reference rate — converted amounts are prefixed with ~. Your bank or the store may apply a different rate at checkout. We never hide offers based on where you are: everyone sees this whole table.
We may earn a commission when you buy games through links on this page — at no extra cost to you. It never affects our rankings or verdicts.

About Age of Wonders 4: Secrets of the Archmages
I've logged enough hours in Paradox 4X titles to know when an expansion is meant for the hardcore versus the curious newcomer, and Secrets of the Archmages is pure endgame material. The three story realms set in the Astral Sea introduce new tome trees and a fresh civilization form, which sound modest until you start building around them and realize the interaction potential with existing spell schools. Six new tomes multiply your strategic permutations significantly if you're the type who spreads spreadsheets across your second monitor. The catch: this is DLC for an existing game with mixed Steam reception (69% positive), so you're inheriting whatever balance quirks or performance hiccups the base game carries. The new world content and story campaigns are solid additions, but there's no getting around the fact that this requires owning the base game and some comfort with Age of Wonders' pacing. If you're already 100 hours into vanilla AoW4 and eyeing that wizard-tower aesthetic, you know whether this lands for you. If you're new to the series, start with the base game instead.
