GamerScout Verdict
A convenient anthology for RTS veterans chasing nostalgia; newcomers should try Age of Empires IV first.

About Age of Empires Anthology
Age of Empires Anthology is exactly what it says: the first three games in the original series, repackaged and maintained by Forgotten Empires (the team behind the recent Age of Empires IV revival). This isn't a remaster or remake. You're getting the same turn-based-feeling medieval tech trees, unit rosters, and campaign structures that defined late-90s strategy gaming, wrapped up with just enough patching to run on modern Windows without the headache of hunting down CD keys and DOS emulation workarounds. If you played these games when they were new, the bundle makes sense as a convenience purchase, all three in one launcher, no compatibility wrestling. If you're coming in cold expecting something that competes with modern RTS or 4X depth, you'll bounce off the UI, the pacing, and how little room there is for wild strategy variation. The AI is predictable. The campaigns are rigid. But there's something almost meditative about the straightforward build-test-attack loop, especially if you're after something slower and more forgiving than StarCraft. The right fit depends entirely on whether you want a history lesson in game design or just want to rebuild the Roman Empire on a Tuesday night.
