18 Wheels of Steel: Across America
A 2000s-era trucking sim that nails the long-haul loop and almost nothing else. Perfect if you want a route planner with an engine sound, rough if you want modern polish.
GamerScout Verdict
Worth it for sim veterans curious about SCS's roots, not for anyone expecting Euro Truck Simulator 2 comforts.

Every store in this table quotes us in euros, so the EUR figure is the price the seller actually set, not our arithmetic — which is why EUR is also the currency we rank in. We only list an offer here when the store gives us its price in euros, so nothing in this table is a number we invented.
Pick USD, PLN, GBP, CAD or AUD in the header and we convert from EUR at the European Central Bank reference rate — converted amounts are prefixed with ~. Your bank or the store may apply a different rate at checkout. We never hide offers based on where you are: everyone sees this whole table.
We may earn a commission when you buy games through links on this page — at no extra cost to you. It never affects our rankings or verdicts.

About 18 Wheels of Steel: Across America
The best thing here is the cargo economy. Every contract is a small optimization puzzle: weight against fuel burn, deadline against the risk of a speeding ticket, and whether you take the interstate or a shorter route with worse road quality. You start hauling other people's freight for a wage, and the whole arc is buying your own rig, then a second one, then hiring drivers to run the boring routes while you take the profitable long hauls. It is SCS Software's early template for what later became Euro Truck Simulator, and the skeleton is already legible: pick a load, plan a run, upgrade, repeat. What it does not do is age gracefully. The visuals are flatly dated, the American map is compressed into a token version of each state, and traffic AI ranges from oblivious to actively suicidal. There is no multiplayer and no meaningful mod scene to patch the gaps. Newcomers should know the tutorial barely exists, so budget an hour of trial and error learning the fatigue and fine systems. If you want a modern trucking sim, go elsewhere. If you specifically want the 2000s version with its scrappier economy, this holds up.
