About Windows 11 Professional N
What is Windows 11 Professional N?
Windows 11 Professional N is a variant of Microsoft's Windows 11 Professional operating system created specifically for sale in the European Economic Area. The "N" designation originates from a 2004 European Commission antitrust ruling that required Microsoft to offer a version of Windows without certain bundled media functionality. Beyond those omissions, it is the same operating system as standard Windows 11 Pro, built and distributed by Microsoft.
What's included
Windows 11 Professional N carries the full Professional feature set:
- BitLocker drive encryption for data security
- Windows Sandbox, for running untrusted applications in an isolated environment
- Hyper-V virtualisation support
- Remote Desktop host capability (connect to this machine remotely)
- Group Policy management tools for IT administrators
- Azure Active Directory and Microsoft Entra domain join
- Assigned Access and kiosk-mode configuration
What is **absent** compared to standard Windows 11 Pro:
- Windows Media Player Legacy
- The modern Media Player inbox app
- Certain codec packs and related multimedia components that ship by default in the non-N edition
If you rely on those built-in media applications, you can install the **Media Feature Pack** from Microsoft's website at no cost after activation, which restores most of the missing functionality. This means the practical day-to-day difference for most users is small.
Licence & activation
Keys sold on price-comparison marketplaces are almost always **OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer)** keys rather than full retail licences, though listings may not always state this explicitly. The distinction matters:
- **OEM keys** are valid, genuine Microsoft keys, but they are tied to the first machine they are activated on and cannot legally be transferred to a new PC.
- **Retail keys** can be deactivated and moved to a different machine.
Activation is straightforward: during Windows 11 installation (or via Settings → System → Activation on an already-installed system), you enter the 25-character product key. Microsoft's servers validate it and activate the licence. Delivery is digital — the key arrives by email, typically within minutes of purchase.
If you are building a new PC that you do not intend to replace, an OEM key is functionally identical to retail for the life of that hardware.
Is it worth it?
Windows 11 Professional N makes sense for:
- **EU-based buyers** who want Pro-tier business and security features without paying the full retail price.
- **IT professionals and developers** who need Hyper-V, Remote Desktop host, or Group Policy — features absent from Windows 11 Home.
- **Anyone indifferent to built-in media apps** — or willing to install the free Media Feature Pack.
It is less suitable if you want a straightforward consumer experience out of the box with no extra steps, or if you are outside the EEA and can simply purchase standard Windows 11 Pro (there is no technical reason a non-EU user cannot use the N edition, but the standard Pro edition will be more convenient).
Compare live prices across stores on this page to find the current best rate. As with all digital key purchases, confirm the seller's refund policy before buying, since activation issues — while uncommon with reputable sources — can occasionally arise with third-party keys.
What you're buying
A genuine activation key for Windows that you redeem yourself. Retail keys are transferable between PCs; OEM keys are locked to one machine. We list the licence type on each offer so you know what you are buying — we never present a one-machine OEM key as a transferable retail one.
Delivery & activation
Every offer we list is a digital license delivered by email — usually within minutes of purchase. You buy on the store; we only compare live prices and link you out. No physical disc, no shipping.
Why is the same windows & os a different price at each store?
Stores compete on digital licence prices and run different regional and promotional deals, so the identical licence can vary widely between them. We track every store live and surface the lowest current price — the same approach behind our cross-store price study. Prices update continuously; check the comparison above for today's cheapest.
Frequently asked questions
All Windows & OS →What is the difference between Windows Home and Pro?
Both run every app and game. Pro adds business and power-user features: BitLocker encryption, Remote Desktop (host), Hyper-V virtualisation, Group Policy and domain join. For home and gaming use, Home is enough; choose Pro if you need those specific features.
What is the difference between a Retail and an OEM key?
A Retail key can be moved to a new PC when you replace hardware. An OEM key is cheaper but permanently tied to the first motherboard it activates. Both activate the same Windows — the difference is transferability.
Are these Windows keys genuine?
We compare offers from established key stores. Genuine retail and OEM keys sit in the main comparison; the licence type is labelled on every offer. Always read the offer details for the activation method before buying.
How do I activate Windows with a key?
Install Windows, then go to Settings → System → Activation → Change product key and enter your key. Some OEM keys use phone activation — the store provides instructions.
Why is the same Windows key cheaper here?
