About Windows 11 Home

What is Windows 11 Home?

Windows 11 Home is Microsoft's current-generation consumer operating system, released in October 2021 as the successor to Windows 10. It is designed for personal and home use on desktop and laptop PCs. This is the entry-level edition of Windows 11 — sitting below Windows 11 Pro in the product line — and it covers the majority of features a home user will ever need.

What's included

Windows 11 Home ships with the full modern Windows desktop environment, including:

  • **Redesigned Start menu and taskbar** — centred layout, Snap Layouts for organising open windows, and Widgets for news and weather.
  • **Microsoft Store** — access to apps, games, and streaming services.
  • **DirectX 12 Ultimate** — the current gaming graphics API, supporting ray tracing and variable-rate shading.
  • **Auto HDR and DirectStorage** — gaming-focused features that improve colour range and reduce load times on compatible hardware.
  • **TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot enforcement** — hardware-level security requirements that are mandatory on Windows 11 (your PC must meet these to install).

What Home does **not** include compared to Windows 11 Pro: full BitLocker drive encryption management, Remote Desktop host, Group Policy editor, Windows Sandbox, and domain/Azure AD join. For most home users none of these absences matter; they become relevant in small-business or power-user contexts.

Licence & activation

Keys sold on price-comparison sites come in two main types, and the distinction matters:

  • **OEM keys** are tied permanently to the first machine they activate on. They are cheaper because Microsoft prices them for PC builders; if your motherboard dies and you replace it, the licence does not transfer. Support goes through the hardware manufacturer, not Microsoft directly.
  • **Retail (Full Packaged Product) keys** are transferable — you can deactivate them on one machine and activate on another. They cost more but follow you across hardware changes.

Activation is the same process regardless of key type: after purchase you receive a 25-character product key by email. You enter it in **Settings → System → Activation**, or during a clean install when prompted. An internet connection is required for online activation. Once activated, the licence is linked to that installation (OEM) or to your Microsoft account (retail, if you sign in before activating).

Is it worth it?

For anyone running Windows 10 on hardware that meets Windows 11's requirements (TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, 64-bit CPU), the upgrade is a meaningful improvement in both UI polish and gaming-specific features. Windows 11 Home covers everything a typical home user does — web browsing, gaming, productivity, media — without the overhead of features locked to the Pro tier.

The honest caveat: **OEM keys sold by third-party resellers are substantially cheaper than retail licences**, but they carry that permanent hardware lock. If you buy a new PC or do a significant motherboard upgrade in future, you may need to buy again. For a desktop you plan to keep long-term, OEM is a reasonable trade-off. For a laptop or a machine you upgrade frequently, retail gives more flexibility.

Compare the prices shown on this page, factor in OEM vs retail before deciding, and confirm your hardware meets Windows 11's system requirements before purchasing.

What you're buying

A genuine activation key for Windows that you redeem yourself. Retail keys are transferable between PCs; OEM keys are locked to one machine. We list the licence type on each offer so you know what you are buying — we never present a one-machine OEM key as a transferable retail one.

Delivery & activation

Every offer we list is a digital license delivered by email — usually within minutes of purchase. You buy on the store; we only compare live prices and link you out. No physical disc, no shipping.

Why is the same windows & os a different price at each store?

Stores compete on digital licence prices and run different regional and promotional deals, so the identical licence can vary widely between them. We track every store live and surface the lowest current price — the same approach behind our cross-store price study. Prices update continuously; check the comparison above for today's cheapest.

Frequently asked questions

All Windows & OS →
What is the difference between Windows Home and Pro?

Both run every app and game. Pro adds business and power-user features: BitLocker encryption, Remote Desktop (host), Hyper-V virtualisation, Group Policy and domain join. For home and gaming use, Home is enough; choose Pro if you need those specific features.

What is the difference between a Retail and an OEM key?

A Retail key can be moved to a new PC when you replace hardware. An OEM key is cheaper but permanently tied to the first motherboard it activates. Both activate the same Windows — the difference is transferability.

Are these Windows keys genuine?

We compare offers from established key stores. Genuine retail and OEM keys sit in the main comparison; the licence type is labelled on every offer. Always read the offer details for the activation method before buying.

How do I activate Windows with a key?

Install Windows, then go to Settings → System → Activation → Change product key and enter your key. Some OEM keys use phone activation — the store provides instructions.

Why is the same Windows key cheaper here?

Stores compete on digital licence prices and run different regional and OEM deals. We surface the lowest live price across every store we track so you do not overpay versus buying direct.
