What is VMware vSphere 7 Enterprise Plus?

VMware vSphere is the industry-standard server-virtualisation platform developed by VMware (now a Broadcom subsidiary). It runs directly on physical server hardware and lets IT teams create, manage, and move virtual machines (VMs) across a data-centre infrastructure. vSphere 7 was a major release that introduced Kubernetes integration via Project Pacific, making it the first vSphere version to treat containers and VMs as first-class workloads on the same platform.

Enterprise Plus is the top tier of the standalone vSphere 7 edition stack, sitting above Standard. It is aimed at large organisations running business-critical or mixed workloads that require the full set of automation, networking, and resiliency features.

**Important context:** Broadcom ended new perpetual-licence sales for VMware products in early 2024. VMware vSphere 7 also reached end of general support in October 2025. Keys offered on third-party marketplaces are typically unused perpetual licences from the secondary market, not new retail stock from Broadcom.

What's included

Enterprise Plus adds a significant layer of capability on top of the Standard edition:

• **vSphere Distributed Switch (vDS)** — centralised network configuration across all hosts in a cluster, with support for LACP, NetFlow, and per-port traffic shaping. Standard is limited to the basic per-host vSwitch.
• **vSphere Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS)** — automatically balances VM workloads across ESXi hosts in a cluster based on resource utilisation. Standard requires manual VM placement.
• **Fault Tolerance (FT) up to 8 vCPUs** — keeps a shadow VM running in lock-step with the primary so that host failure causes zero downtime and zero data loss. Standard supports FT only up to 2 vCPUs.
• **vSphere Storage DRS** — balances VM storage across datastores automatically.
• **vSphere Trust Authority (vTA)** — provides hardware-rooted trust for key management, enabling VM encryption workflows to be governed by a hardened, dedicated trust cluster. Note that VM Encryption itself is also available in the Standard edition; vTA is the Enterprise Plus-exclusive governance layer on top of it.
• **Proactive HA** — integrates with hardware health sensors to migrate VMs away from a failing host before it goes down.

Licensing is per physical processor, covering up to 32 cores per socket. There is no VM-count cap.

Licence and activation

vSphere 7 Enterprise Plus uses a perpetual-licence model: you receive a licence key that unlocks the software permanently for the version purchased. The key is entered inside vCenter Server or directly on an ESXi host via the vSphere Client. Delivery on resale platforms is typically digital — the key arrives by email after purchase.

This is not an OEM or machine-locked licence in the consumer sense, but the key is tied to the vSphere 7 version line and does not automatically entitle you to vSphere 8 or current Broadcom subscription products. Support and Subscription (SnS) is a separate contract; without it you continue to run the software but lose access to patches and Broadcom technical support.

Is it worth it?

For an enterprise team maintaining an existing vSphere 7 environment, a secondary-market Enterprise Plus key is a practical route to unlock features (DRS, vDS, 8-vCPU FT) that Standard omits — often at a fraction of original list price.

However, buyers should weigh three honest caveats. First, vSphere 7 is past end of general support, so new security patches are no longer issued. Second, Broadcom's current licensing model centres on subscription bundles (vSphere Foundation, VMware Cloud Foundation), and migrating eventually is likely. Third, secondary-market keys carry the usual due-diligence risk of any resale licence.

This edition is not suitable for organisations starting fresh who plan to run modern Broadcom-supported infrastructure — for them, evaluating the current subscription tiers is the better starting point. For legacy environments where the budget does not justify a full subscription migration, Enterprise Plus on vSphere 7 remains technically capable and feature-complete for its generation.
