About Microsoft Project Professional 2019

What is Microsoft Project Professional 2019?

Microsoft Project Professional 2019 is a desktop project management application developed by Microsoft. It is part of the Office 2019 generation of products, meaning it is sold as a perpetual licence — you pay once and own that version indefinitely. It is intended for professional project managers and team leads who need to plan, track, and analyse projects of moderate to high complexity.

This edition sits above Project Standard 2019 in Microsoft's product line. The "Professional" designation unlocks collaboration and connectivity capabilities that the Standard tier omits — most notably the ability to connect to Project Server or Project Online, and the Team Planner view.

What's included

Project Professional 2019 centres on Gantt chart-based scheduling and covers the core workflow from initial planning through to progress tracking:

  • **Task scheduling** — manual and automatic scheduling modes, dependencies, milestones, and critical-path analysis.
  • **Resource management** — assign people, equipment, and materials to tasks; view workloads and resolve over-allocations. Both Professional and Standard include resource assignment; Professional adds resource levelling and the additional views described below.
  • **Timeline view** — a visual summary bar you can share with stakeholders outside the tool.
  • **Reporting** — built-in graphical reports covering burndown, resource usage, cost overview, and more.
  • **Project Server / Project Online connectivity** — Professional 2019 can connect to an on-premises Project Server or Microsoft's cloud-based Project Online environment for enterprise collaboration and portfolio management. This is one of the two primary features absent from Standard 2019.
  • **Team Planner view** — a drag-and-drop interface for balancing work across team members. Also absent from Standard 2019, this is the other key differentiator from the lower tier.

It does not include a Project Online subscription; server connectivity requires a separately licenced server environment.

Licence & activation

Project Professional 2019 is sold as a product key that you redeem at Microsoft's activation portal or directly during installation. Activation ties the licence to your Microsoft account or, in some key types, to the hardware (OEM).

**Retail keys** are tied to a Microsoft account and can in principle be transferred to a new machine if you deactivate the old one — consistent with Microsoft's standard retail policy.

**OEM keys** obtained through the grey-market channel are typically cheaper but are locked to the first machine they activate on and are not officially transferable. If your PC dies, the licence may not move with you. Keys sold outside Microsoft's official channels often fall into this category; be aware of that trade-off before purchasing.

Delivery is digital: you receive a product key by email, download the installer from Microsoft, and activate during or after installation. No physical media is involved.

Is it worth it?

Project Professional 2019 suits project managers who need Project Server or Project Online connectivity, the Team Planner view, or resource levelling, and who prefer a one-off cost over Microsoft's subscription-based Project Plan offerings.

If your needs are simpler — basic task lists and Gantt charts for personal use — Project Standard 2019 covers that at a lower price point, and even simpler tools may suffice.

One honest caveat: this is a 2019-generation product. Microsoft's active development focus is on the subscription (Project Plan) line, which receives ongoing feature updates. Project 2019 is supported but receives security patches only, not new features. For most scheduling and resource work, however, the 2019 feature set remains fully capable.

The grey-market key discount is real, but factor in the OEM lock-in risk. For a machine you expect to replace or upgrade, a retail key offers meaningfully more flexibility.

What you're buying

A licence key for the Office edition shown — perpetual keys are a one-time purchase you own for that version; subscription keys cover a fixed term. We label which is which so a one-year subscription never looks cheaper than a lifetime licence.

Delivery & activation

Every offer we list is a digital license delivered by email — usually within minutes of purchase. You buy on the store; we only compare live prices and link you out. No physical disc, no shipping.

Why is the same office & productivity a different price at each store?

Stores compete on digital licence prices and run different regional and promotional deals, so the identical licence can vary widely between them. We track every store live and surface the lowest current price — the same approach behind our cross-store price study. Prices update continuously; check the comparison above for today's cheapest.

Frequently asked questions

All Office & productivity →
Office 2021 vs Microsoft 365 — which should I buy?

Office 2021 (and other perpetual versions) is a one-time purchase you keep forever, ideal if you do not need the latest features. Microsoft 365 is a subscription that always updates and adds OneDrive storage and multi-device installs. Pay-once = perpetual; always-current + cloud = 365.

Is a cheap Office key legitimate?

We compare offers from established stores. Read the offer details: a genuine retail/OEM Office licence activates through your Microsoft account. We keep cheaper shared accounts in a separate, clearly-labelled tier.

Does an Office key include Word, Excel and PowerPoint?

Yes — the core suite includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote; Professional editions add Outlook, Publisher and Access. Project and Visio are licensed separately.

Can I install Office on more than one PC?

A perpetual licence covers one PC. Microsoft 365 subscriptions allow multiple devices. Check the offer for the exact device allowance.
