Gundam VS without the mechs: a 3D aerial PvP brawler where dodging bullets is offense, and getting lazy with your Boost Step will cost you the round.

I came into Valkyrie of Phantasm expecting a novelty Touhou spin-off and left genuinely surprised at how much mechanical substance AREAZERO packed into what looks, on the surface, like a cute anime arena fighter. The closest reference points are Gundam EXVS and Virtual On, and the game leans into that lineage without apology. Characters stay permanently airborne, which removes ground-game entirely and forces you to think in three dimensions. Your energy meter only drains on Boost Dash and Boost Step, so positioning is a constant resource-management puzzle rather than a stamina bar you watch tick down. Get comfortable burning meter to close, step, and cancel, or accept that you will eat every spell card your opponent throws. The core of what makes the combat tick is the Graze system, borrowed directly from classic danmaku design. Late-dodging through incoming projectiles with Boost Step fills your Drive Gauge, which feeds into Accel Drive, a temporary power-up that scales from Level 1 through Level MAX and unlocks Accel Drive Spells and, at full charge, a single devastating Ultimate Spell. It sounds like a lot on paper but once the muscle memory clicks, the loop becomes gratifying fast. Step Cancel, where you Boost Dash immediately after an attack to cut recovery frames, is the mechanical ceiling worth grinding toward. Characters like Youmu, who wants to be in your face mixing melee into spells, will punish you hard for sloppy cancels. Reimu and Marisa play more like all-rounders, while Patchouli is pure space control, throwing bullet patterns to deny angles while you burn meter trying to close distance. The roster has grown via post-launch DLC updates past the initial four, which helps differentiation. The spell card customization system, where you slot spells into a cost-limited loadout, adds a lightweight build layer without turning into a spreadsheet problem. The rough edges are real and worth naming. Melee targeting has a well-documented awkwardness where certain side-dash attacks scramble the lock-on logic, leading to inconsistent hit registration especially online. It is not game-breaking at casual level but if you are trying to optimize, it is a friction point that should have been tighter at 1.0. The camera also struggles in close-quarters, losing its angle at the worst possible moments during melee trades. Online matchmaking works and got cleaner post-launch, but the player pool is small. You are not going to get Tekken-lobby numbers here. Whether you can find a game at your skill tier depends heavily on time of day and whether the Discord is active. No ranked ladder with brackets or visible MMR has been confirmed, which for a PvP-first game is the single thing I would push hardest for in a future update. For who this is actually for: if you grew up playing Virtual On in arcades, logged serious time in Gundam Maxiboost, or you want a competitive aerial fighter that is distinct from anything currently in the genre, Valkyrie of Phantasm has a legitimate skill ceiling worth investing in. The Touhou branding might make people write it off, but that would be a mistake. If you need a full-featured ranked ecosystem with a healthy casual queue right now, the audience size means you may hit a wall. Go in with a friend if you can, and the experience tightens considerably. Fred, Scout Team

GamerScout Verdict

Worth it for Gundam VS and Virtual On fans who can accept a small but dedicated online pool and no formal ranked ladder yet.

Every store in this table quotes us in euros, so the EUR figure is the price the seller actually set, not our arithmetic — which is why EUR is also the currency we rank in. We only list an offer here when the store gives us its price in euros, so nothing in this table is a number we invented.

Pick USD, PLN, GBP, CAD or AUD in the header and we convert from EUR at the European Central Bank reference rate — converted amounts are prefixed with ~. Your bank or the store may apply a different rate at checkout. We never hide offers based on where you are: everyone sees this whole table.

We may earn a commission when you buy games through links on this page — at no extra cost to you. It never affects our rankings or verdicts.
