Give this one an hour before you judge it. Starlight Legacy opens with the slow, deliberate rhythm of a handheld RPG from three console generations ago: plain turn-based menus, encounters that ask you to actually read your party's stat spreads, and no modern hand-holding to tell you where to go next. What it hands back once you're through that gate is a genuinely non-linear open world, four provinces tackled in whatever order you decide, with party building that rewards planning rather than a level curve that scolds you for exploring off-script. The collectathon streak and short overall runtime are the honest limits here. This isn't a 60-hour epic with branching dialogue that pays off on a second read, and the writing is charming rather than deep. But it earns its 95 percent by knowing exactly what it is and refusing to pad: no XP grind wall dropped in front of the next province, no filler fetch chain to inflate the clock. Retro-JRPG fans who want a complete arc in a weekend will find plenty. Anyone hunting for character work with real teeth should look elsewhere.
