Rhythm games rarely nail the feel of actually playing music. Spin Rhythm XD does, and it will quietly eat your evening if you let it.

I came at this one with shooter-brain and low expectations, and Spin Rhythm XD punched through that in about twenty minutes. The core loop puts a color-coded wheel at the bottom of the screen that you rotate with the analog stick or mouse, catching red and blue notes as they flow down the track. Four actions - spin, tap, flick, and slide - cover everything. On Easy it feels almost meditative. Crank it to Hard or Expert and you're running a rapid-fire sequence of button presses, holds, sustains, and directional spins that demands genuine reaction speed and muscle memory. XD difficulty, which is only available on select tracks, is the mode that will break you and make you want to run it back immediately. The control scheme is the thing that separates this from Guitar Hero nostalgia or osu! finger-tap monotony. Sliding your mouse or flicking an analog stick to spin the wheel carries actual physical weight to it, the kind that pure button-tappers can't replicate. On PC specifically, the game supports MIDI DJ turntables if you want to go full hardware mode, which is one of the more interesting peripheral options I've seen in the genre. Mouse and keyboard works well too, and controller sensitivity is adjustable, so getting the input tuned to your setup takes maybe five minutes and then it stays out of your way. The soundtrack runs over 80 licensed tracks spanning techno, dubstep, chillwave, hip-hop, and a few weirder sub-genres. Artists like Camellia, Anamanaguchi, Hyper Potions, and Tokyo Machine headline it. The honest caveat: if EDM does nothing for you, this library is not going to convert you. Every mechanic in the game is built around making you feel the music, so genre fit matters more here than in something like Guitar Hero where the note highway and the song are more loosely coupled. Know that going in. Progression is handled cleanly. Completing songs earns XP, leveling up unlocks wheel skins, track textures, UI skins, and note appearances. None of it is locked behind additional purchases, which in 2024 feels like it needs saying out loud. The grading system goes beyond full combo, pushing you to hit Perfect+ on individual notes to chase 100% completion, which gives hardcore scorechasing players a real target on every track. The level editor is also in a solid state on PC, and the developer has been shipping post-launch track packs including a collab with indie-rock artists and crossover content from other rhythm titles. Online multiplayer is still listed as a planned addition rather than a live feature, which is the one genuine gap for anyone who wants a ranked ladder to grind. For a shooter guy, the thing I kept noticing was how performance-sensitive the input really is. There is no lag forgiveness at higher difficulties, and the game's grading makes it clear when your timing is off. That honesty is something I respect. If your monitor runs at high refresh and you are dialed in on sensitivity, the game responds cleanly. It is a tight, well-built package that somehow flew under the radar even after shipping on Steam, Switch, and PlayStation. Underappreciated is the word critics keep landing on, and they are right.
