SpellForce III Reforced is one of the genuinely rare genre hybrids that makes a case for its own existence. Grimlore Games mashes real-time strategy base-building directly into party-based CRPG adventuring, and while the seams are visible, the result is more coherent than it has any right to be. You play Tahar, the son of a renegade mage who kicked off a catastrophic war, navigating a world that is already judging you before you speak a word. The land of Eo is reeling from the aftermath of the Mage Wars and a spreading plague called the Bloodburn, and the political tensions between factions - including the zealous Purity of Light under the charismatic Rondar Lacaine - give the writing real texture. The story is the clear standout here: it earns a mid-campaign gut-punch that reframes your entire mission, and the cast of companions each carry their own histories that feed back into the main narrative in ways that actually matter. On the CRPG side, you build your hero from distinct skill trees, manage a party of up to three companions, and choose between spells, auras, and passive talents that shape your combat identity. Characters can equip armor, weapons, and jewelry that shift their stat profiles, and the skill-wheel system lets you queue abilities without the game devolving into pure button-mashing. On the RTS side, you gather wood and stone, construct barracks and defense towers, recruit armies, and push into enemy sectors. The two halves take turns rather than running truly simultaneously, and that is both a design compromise and an honest concession - when you are deep in a story scene, the last thing you want is to suddenly babysit supply lines. The RTS sequences can feel like they stall the narrative momentum, but they rarely outstay their welcome at lower difficulties. Reforced is the definitive version of the 2017 original: it brings reworked skill trees, tweaked loot and item drops, rebalanced AI, and two substantial post-launch modes. Journey Mode gives you a custom mercenary hero who persists across over 20 hours of standalone Contracts, earning gear and leveling up between maps, playable solo or in co-op. Arena Mode throws you into escalating horde waves where you spend loot on spells and equipment on the fly. Both modes add serious replay value beyond the 30-hour main campaign, and Journey Mode in particular is where build theorycrafting finds room to breathe. The honest critique is that neither genre half reaches the ceiling of its respective best-in-class. The skill trees are solid but narrower than a dedicated RPG - there are no secondary skills like lockpicking or stealth, and the ability roster is modest by today's standards. The RTS side likewise lacks the iterative depth of a dedicated strategy game; once you crack the economy loop and settle on a faction build, the base management becomes repetitive on longer maps.
