A colorful 2.5D RPG-adventure where you restore hope to a drained world by talking monsters out of fights instead of beating them senseless.

Rainbow Billy: The Curse of the Leviathan is a 2.5D adventure RPG from ManaVoid Entertainment that wears its heart loudly on its sleeve. The world has been drained of color by a mysterious Leviathan, and it is your job as Billy to sail across a storybook ocean, meet despairing creatures, and convince them that life is worth living again. If that premise sounds aggressively wholesome, that is because it absolutely is, and the game commits to it without blinking. The mechanical hook that sets this apart from standard indie RPGs is its combat system, which is less "combat" and more "emotional intervention." Instead of whittling down enemy HP bars, you fill a friendship meter by landing color-coded attacks that match the emotional state of whoever you are talking to. Each encounter is essentially a puzzle built around reading what a character needs and responding with the right combination of creature companions you collect along the way. It sounds simple, and for the most part it is, which is a design choice rather than an oversight. The game is clearly aimed at younger players and families, but the mechanic has just enough variation to keep older players from switching off entirely. Worldbuilding is where Rainbow Billy punches noticeably above its weight class. The over-world sailing segments, the distinct biomes, and the cast of NPCs all feel like they belong to a coherent, lovingly constructed universe rather than a random grab-bag of cute assets. Each major character you meet carries a small emotional arc, usually tied to themes of loneliness, self-doubt, or fear of failure. The writing does not talk down to younger players, and some of the heavier beats land with genuine sincerity. Do not expect Disco Elysium levels of existential complexity, but do expect more thematic substance than most games wearing a pastel color palette. Where the game stumbles is pacing. Side quests and collectible hunts stretch certain chapters longer than the narrative momentum can sustain. The friendship-meter battles, charming in the first few hours, become repetitive by the midpoint because the core loop does not evolve enough to match the growing roster of companions. Build variety is essentially nonexistent in any meaningful RPG sense, so if you arrive expecting deep character customization or branching ability trees, reset those expectations now. This is a linear, story-forward experience dressed in RPG clothing rather than a systems-heavy RPG. That said, for what it is targeting, it delivers with real craft. The 2.5D art direction is gorgeous, the soundtrack is genuinely good, and the emotional sincerity of the writing earns its moments. Parents looking for a co-play experience with younger kids will find it excellent. Adult RPG fans coming off something brutal and punishing may find it a perfectly pleasant palette cleanser, as long as they accept it on its own terms rather than demanding mechanical depth it was never designed to provide.
