PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS is free-to-play — free to download and play, with optional paid editions and DLC compared on this page. Developed by PUBG Corporation. Published by KRAFTON, Inc.. Released on 12/21/2017. Available on PC. Genres: Action, Adventure, Massively Multiplayer, Free To Play.

The game that invented the genre still has sharper gunfights than most of its imitators, but free-to-play brought cheaters in numbers that can genuinely wreck your ranked climb.

I have a complicated relationship with PUBG. Nine years in and it is still the battle royale I keep coming back to when I want a shooter that actually punishes mistakes. The time-to-kill is brutal in all the right ways: one or two well-placed rounds from an M416, a VSS, or a bolt-action across Miramar's open desert and you are watching a death screen. That lethality is what separates it from the spray-and-pray chaos of its competitors, and it is the thing nobody has quite managed to copy correctly. The map roster is the strongest argument for still being here. Erangel remains the gold standard, and recent updates turned it into a frozen wasteland called Erangel Subzero, with dynamic weather, frozen rivers, and a disabled Red Zone that genuinely changes how you rotate and take fights. Miramar punishes anyone who forgets what suppression fire is. Sanhok is a small-map meat grinder for when you want guaranteed early contact. Kraken runs 64 players and introduces a Black Zone that demolishes entire buildings, which is chaotic in a fun way. Each map has map-specific weapons too, so the QBU on Sanhok, the G36C on Vikendi, and the Mosin Nagant on Deston each pull loadout decisions in different directions depending on where you drop. The ranked system got a serious overhaul in 2025 and 2026 is already building on it. Update 36.1 added two new tiers, Crystal and Survivor, with Survivor sitting above Master as an exclusive top rank. RP is now unified across FPP, TPP, Duos, and Squads, which removes a persistent annoyance for anyone who switches perspectives. Normal Match mechanics like the Recall System and Zipline Gun also made it into Ranked, which sounds casual on paper but actually adds more decision points late-game. Weapon balance has been on a two-month rotation cycle, and recent patches have worked through DMR dominance, VSS overperformance, and AR recoil gaps between the AUG and M416. The dev team is moving to intentional four-month meta rotations in 2026, which is the right call if they stick to it. Here is the honest problem. The Steam review score sits under 60 percent positive across over two and a half million reviews, and the single consistent complaint is cheating. Going free-to-play made ban evasion essentially frictionless, and the anti-cheat has never fully closed that gap. Ranked is locked behind the paid BATTLEGROUNDS Plus membership, which acts as some deterrent, but high-rank lobbies still see cheaters cycle through seasons. Server quality is the other recurring complaint: stutter and inconsistent hit registration have been present since 2017 and remain a real issue in certain regions and peak hours. If you are running a low-latency setup with a high-polling-rate mouse and a 144Hz or better monitor, you will notice when the servers are not cooperating. That friction is not imagined. For a free entry point into what is genuinely the most mechanically demanding battle royale on PC, PUBG is worth the install. The looting, inventory management, vehicle plays, and positional gunfights have a depth that is earned, not handed to you. Just go in knowing that Ranked requires the Plus subscription, that the meta is actively shifting, and that cheaters are a real variable above Diamond. If you can stomach those caveats and want a game where individual decisions matter more than reaction speed alone, nothing else quite fills this slot. Fred, Scout Team
