Let me be straight with you: I cover shooters for a living, so a 3D anime arena fighter is not my usual Tuesday night. But this is a fighting game with a multiplayer ladder, a roster north of 100 characters, and online tournament modes, so the same questions apply. Is the combat actually doing something, or is it just button-mashing dressed up in flashy jutsu animations? Short answer: it is a bit of both, and that is fine once you know what you are walking into. The base Storm 4 combat runs in a 3D arena, and wall-running is back after being absent for entries in the series. Teams of three fighters take the field with assist mechanics, and every character packs a regular Jutsu, a Secret (super) Jutsu, and an Awakening mode that powers them up when health gets low. There is a substitution mechanic that acts as a burst-cancel analogue, burning through a limited gauge to dodge out of combos. On paper that sounds like depth; in practice the entry barrier is genuinely low, because auto-combos handle most of the neutral for you. The ceiling, though, is real enough that online play punishes you the moment you get lazy. Up to eight-player online tournaments are available, plus survival mode and free battle. The ranked side is not a competitive shooter ladder with tight matchmaking windows, but for an anime fighter audience it is reasonably active. The Road to Boruto expansion is the reason this particular Steam key exists. It adds a self-contained story campaign set roughly fifteen years after the Fourth Shinobi World War, following Naruto's son Boruto through the Chunin Exams and an invasion by the Otsutsuki clan. New playable characters include multiple forms of Boruto, Sarada, Mitsuki, and adult versions of Naruto and Sasuke, plus the expansion opens up a rebuilt Hidden Leaf Village as an open-world hub for side quests. The Boruto campaign runs short, four hours or so if you push the main story, and the side quests are the weakest part of the package. Busywork fetch missions and encounter spam pad the runtime in ways that feel like afterthoughts rather than content. The main story beats are visually strong, especially the big set-piece fights that mix regular three-on-three combat, QTE sequences, and kaiju-scale boss brawls, but the expansion does not hit the dramatic highs of the base game's Fourth Shinobi World War arc. If you have a soft spot for the Naruto property, those highs are still there. If you are indifferent to the story, the expansion is thin. On PC specifically, the game has a documented FPS issue that the community has worked around with settings adjustments. It is not a broken port by any means, and fights run fluidly at proper framerates once you tweak things, but it is the kind of thing that should not require a community workaround years after release. Netcode in online play is serviceable without being impressive. You are not getting rollback. For a casual to mid-level audience that wants to three-round their friends on a Saturday, it is fine. For anyone trying to compete at a serious level, manage expectations. Bottom line: Road to Boruto is worth owning if you already have the base game and care about the Naruto universe. As a standalone key, it unlocks extra story content and new characters for a fighting game that was already well-regarded. The combat is accessible, the roster is absurd in size, and the cinematic production values remain some of the best in the anime fighter genre. Just go in knowing the Boruto story campaign is short and the side quests are padding.
