The fighting game that refused to die turns ten and arrives on Steam with its full 29-fighter roster unlocked. Free-to-play gets you in the door; the Anniversary Edition is the key to the whole house.

I have watched enough live-service fighters flatline mid-season to know that a ten-year-old fighting game still pulling Very Positive reviews on Steam is not something you dismiss. Killer Instinct launched in 2013, went years without a meaningful patch, and somehow kept a competitive scene breathing through sheer mechanical quality. The Anniversary Edition, handled by Iron Galaxy, is the most complete and best-supported the game has ever been on PC, and that is worth saying plainly. The structure is a free-to-play base game with a weekly rotating single fighter, plus Single-Player, Local, and Ranked modes. If you pay for the Anniversary Edition, you unlock all 29 fighters from Seasons 1 through 3 outright, alongside every premium costume, retro skin, specialty accessory, and the VIP Double XP Booster. The Definitive Edition was retired when this launched, so Anniversary Edition is now the definitive way to own the full package. One thing to flag: the old Definitive Edition came bundled with the original Killer Instinct Classic 1 and 2 arcade games. Those are gone from this edition, which will sting for collectors even if most players will never notice. The combat itself still holds up in ways that embarrass games half its age. The Instinct Meter, Combo Breaker system, and Shadow Moves create a read-heavy neutral game where knowing your opponent matters more than memorizing a frame-data spreadsheet. The Dojo tutorial mode is genuinely one of the better onboarding systems in the genre, walking newcomers through Combo Breaker timing with actual practice scenarios rather than a wall of text. Shadow Lords, the roguelike single-player mode, gives you a reason to run matches outside of ranked without feeling like meaningless filler. The daily reward loop in Shadow Lords and the broader reward systems hand out XP, Astral Gems, Shadow Points, and KI Gold, which feeds back into character customization. It is an economy that nudges you to log in, but it is not punishing about it. The two daily reward tracks feel more like a nudge than a gate, which is more than most live-service adjacent fighters manage. The balance pass updated 19 of the 29 characters, with characters like Kilgore, Shin Hisako, and Eagle finally getting the tuning they were robbed of at launch years ago. Ten fighters, including Sabrewulf, TJ Combo, and Arbiter, were left largely untouched, which is either a sign of confidence or a missed opportunity depending on your main. Matchmaking improvements and the move to DX12 on console round out the technical side, and the PC version runs clean. The roster has genuine variety: you have zoners, grapplers, rushdown monsters, and some fighters with move sets that still feel like nothing else in the genre. What the Anniversary Edition does not do is add new content. There are no new fighters, no new story chapters, no new stages beyond the 20 already in the game. This is a restoration and a repackage, not a sequel. For players hoping Iron Galaxy reignites active development, the Anniversary Edition is a clear-eyed celebration of what exists, not a promise of what comes next. Whether the matchmaking improvements are enough to sustain ranked queue health long-term is the real question, and only time will answer it. For now, the player count is healthy enough to find games, and the skill ceiling is high enough that you will be climbing for months before you hit a wall. Yuki, Scout Team

Every store in this table quotes us in euros, so the EUR figure is the price the seller actually set, not our arithmetic — which is why EUR is also the currency we rank in. We only list an offer here when the store gives us its price in euros, so nothing in this table is a number we invented.

Pick USD, PLN, GBP, CAD or AUD in the header and we convert from EUR at the European Central Bank reference rate — converted amounts are prefixed with ~. Your bank or the store may apply a different rate at checkout. We never hide offers based on where you are: everyone sees this whole table.

We may earn a commission when you buy games through links on this page — at no extra cost to you. It never affects our rankings or verdicts.
