Sixteen solo scenarios that stress-test individual mercenaries to their limits. Fan of the board game or the base campaign? This is where builds get proven.

Gloomhaven's base campaign is already a brutal, board-game-faithful tactical RPG that demands careful hand management, ability-card sequencing, and an honest respect for enemy initiative. This DLC, Solo Scenarios: Mercenary Challenges, strips away the co-op safety net and drops each of the game's mercenary classes into a hand-crafted gauntlet designed specifically around that class's strengths and, more pointedly, its weaknesses. Sixteen standalone scenarios, one per mercenary, each built to punish lazy builds and reward players who have actually internalized how their chosen character is supposed to work. The design philosophy here is refreshingly unforgiving. Each scenario acts as a kind of final exam for its class. The Brute scenario will ask you to absorb damage in ways that feel impossible until you realize which loss cards you should have been holding back for forty minutes. The Spellweaver scenario is a mana-burning sprint that collapses if you misread the room order even once. This is not content that holds your hand. If you have been coasting through the main campaign by leaning on a stronger party member to carry the load, these challenges will expose that immediately and without mercy. For veteran players who have already exhausted the campaign, that friction is exactly the point. From a build-variety standpoint, the DLC earns its asking price by forcing genuine min-maxing conversations with yourself. You cannot blob together a generalist loadout and grind through. The scenarios require specific perk selections, card retirement choices, and item loadouts that feel considered rather than accidental. This is the kind of content that makes you tab out to a wiki, reconsider your entire level-up history, and then feel disproportionately good when you finally clear a room in exactly the sequence the scenario demanded. The writing and narrative context are thin, which is the one real knock here. These are mechanical proving grounds, not story beats, so if you came to Gloomhaven primarily for its world and lore, this DLC is not going to move the needle on that front. The visual and audio presentation matches the base game faithfully, which is to say it is functional and atmospheric without being flashy. Turn resolution, card animations, and enemy pathing all behave consistently with what you already know. There are no new systems introduced, no new enemy types that require a learning curve from scratch. The challenge comes entirely from scenario construction and self-imposed class mastery, which is actually the right call. Adding new mechanics on top of a system this deep would risk muddying what the DLC is actually trying to test. If you have a favourite mercenary class and want to see how far you can push it, or if you cleared the campaign and feel the tactical itch returning, Solo Scenarios delivers a tight, concentrated dose of exactly what Gloomhaven does best. If you are still working through the main story or have not yet unlocked several mercenaries, park this until you are ready. It rewards depth of knowledge, not breadth of hours logged.
