The gunplay is the best the series has ever produced. Enemies have shields, armor, or flesh, and matching elemental damage types actually matters for time-to-kill efficiency. This is not a game where you ignore gear. Combat takes place in multi-tiered open arenas, and while enemy AI is not going to challenge your positioning discipline, the sheer volume and variety of incoming damage keeps the pace honest. The co-op works well. Up to four players can run together at any time with instanced loot, meaning nobody misses drops, and matchmaking lets you join sessions regardless of personal mission progress. Cross-platform play was added in a 2022 update, which expanded the pool. For a co-op shooter, the session quality is solid. This is the kind of game you sink into with two friends and emerge from three hours later with opinions about whether the Jakobs or Torgue manufacturer is superior for your build. The criticisms are real and worth knowing. The story villains, the Calypso twins, landed poorly with a large chunk of the audience and do not match the writing quality of earlier entries in the series. Enemy bullet-sponginess at higher difficulty settings frustrated players who wanted tactical snap rather than attrition. The game also shipped in 2019 with notable PC performance issues, though patches addressed most of them over time. The humor is loud and juvenile, which is either the point or a dealbreaker depending on your tolerance level. Bottom line on this bundle: if you want Borderlands 3 and happen to play Fortnite, this is a clean way to grab both.
