One of the best open-world shooters ever made, and still worth every hour in 2024 - just know the online co-op servers have been dead for years.

I've recommended Far Cry 3 to basically everyone who has ever asked me for a single-player open-world shooter, and after all this time the answer hasn't changed. Set on the Rook Islands, a sprawling tropical archipelago crawling with pirates, predators, and genuinely unpredictable chaos, this is the game that defined what a Ubisoft open world could feel like when everything clicks. Jason Brody starts as a helpless tourist and slowly becomes something much darker - it's a story arc that actually lands, anchored by one of gaming's most memorable antagonists in Vaas Montenegro. The campaign runs around 15-20 hours for the main story, and easily doubles if you go hunting for every radio tower, outpost, and side contract. The core loop is where Far Cry 3 earns its reputation. Five interlocking systems - sneaking, shooting, driving, exploring, and hunting - all feed into a leveling and progression system that makes almost every action feel purposeful. Outpost assaults are the highlight: you can tag enemies with your camera, ghost through with a silenced sniper rifle and a combat knife, or blow the front gate open with a grenade launcher and let the chaos sort itself out. Both approaches are genuinely supported by the mechanics. Hunting animals is tied directly to gear upgrades - kill the right wildlife, craft bigger ammo pouches and weapon holsters. It sounds grindy on paper but plays out naturally as you roam the map. The 18 radio towers are first-person climbing puzzles that reward you with free weapons and map reveals, and almost every one of them has a satisfying payoff at the top. For the multiplayer crowd, there's important context in 2024. Far Cry 3 launched with a separate four-player co-op campaign - six missions, a shared XP system, and its own storyline set six months before the single-player events. It was a genuine bonus, not an afterthought. However, Ubisoft shut down the official PC master servers in early 2024, which means online co-op and competitive multiplayer are effectively dead for now without community workarounds. If you're buying this expecting to run the co-op campaign with friends online, manage your expectations - it's a single-player purchase in practice. On PC the game still holds up visually, and it runs on modest hardware without much fuss. The RPG skill tree - split into Heron, Shark, and Spider paths representing ranged, combat, and stealth play styles - gives you enough build variety to feel different on a replay. Boss fights are the one obvious weak spot: most of them lean on quick-time events instead of letting you use the mechanics you've spent hours learning. The drug-trip hallucination sequences are inventive and weird in the best way. The story goes to some genuinely dark places in the back half, which not everyone expects from what looks like a tropical action game on the surface. If you've never played it, Far Cry 3 is as essential as open-world PC gaming gets. If you're returning for a replay, it holds up better than you might fear. Just come in knowing this is a solo adventure now - the co-op days are behind it. Riley, Scout Team
