When you swap formations mid-match, your wide players actually respond to adjusted instructions, and a quick tap of the d-pad surfaces preset tactical packages like Tiki Taka or Park the Bus with a live minimap preview of how positions shift. For a football sim, that is genuinely smart design. The problem is that none of those tactical gains matter much in Ultimate Team, which is the mode this currency is built to feed. FUT runs on a pack-based reward system where real money converts to FC Points, which convert to randomised card packs containing real-world player cards at randomised quality tiers. The odds are opaque, the top-rated cards cluster near the top of the calendar when the packs are freshest, and if you arrive late in the season, promo cards from months of Squad Building Challenges will have already driven the squad-rating ceiling well above what a free-to-play grind can realistically reach. The Steam community's 53% positive rating reflects exactly that frustration, compounded by incremental year-over-year changes that casual players find hard to justify. Career Mode and Kick Off exist completely outside this economy and are genuinely solid. The player career path lets you choose a personality archetype, set a target club, and earn ability unlocks through training drills and match performance, with starting ratings adjusted slightly upward compared to the previous year's equivalent mode. The FC IQ role assignments carry into Career Mode too, so a holding midfielder actually behaves like one rather than drifting up the pitch at random. If that is your lane, you can safely ignore FC Points entirely. So who is this currency actually for? Dedicated Ultimate Team players who understand the pack economy and have decided they want to accelerate squad-building rather than grind FUT coins match by match. The honest answer is that FC Points do not change the underlying match engine, do not unlock Career Mode content, and do not affect any mode outside Ultimate Team. They are a time-skip inside a meta defined by weekly promotions and rotating SBC requirements. If you are comfortable with that transaction and have already made peace with the live-service model, the points function exactly as advertised. If you are new to the series and hoping this currency unlocks a better game, it does not. The better game is underneath the monetization layer, and it costs nothing extra to access.
