Beyond Light drags Destiny 2 to Europa's frozen tundra and hands you Stasis powers, the first new damage type in years. Worth it if you're already in the ecosystem.

Beyond Light is a paid expansion plus seasonal content bundle for Destiny 2, Bungie's shared-world shooter that has been running since 2017. It takes your Guardian to Europa, a cryo-hostile moon of Jupiter, and introduces Stasis as a playable subclass type, the first genuinely new elemental damage type the game had seen since launch. Hunters get Revenant, Titans get Behemoth, Warlocks get Shadebinder. Each of these Stasis specs plays differently enough that the subclass unlock grind, handled through the Aspect and Fragment system, actually feels like building something rather than just leveling a bar. If you bounced off Arc or Void because the fantasy didn't land, Stasis's crowd-control freeze loops might be the version of Destiny 2 that finally clicks for you. The campaign itself is compact by modern expansion standards. The story, centered on the Darkness, Eramis the Kell of Darkness, and some genuinely solid cutscene work for a live-service shooter, runs maybe six to eight hours straight through. That is not a criticism. Destiny 2 campaigns have never been the reason anyone keeps logging in. The reason you keep logging in is the ritual: weekly vendor resets, pinnacle drops, the raid. The Deep Stone Crypt raid that shipped with Beyond Light is considered by the community to be among the better raids in the franchise's history, mechanically and aesthetically. If you have a six-person fireteam and a few free evenings, it is the clearest argument for buying this expansion. The Season Pass component is a separate conversation. Destiny 2's seasonal model is the part of this package that has the most variance in value depending on when you're reading this. Seasonal content in Destiny 2 follows a roughly three-month cadence, with a story drip, a seasonal activity, an artifact with temporary power mods, and a battle pass-style reward track. The seasons included with this bundle followed Beyond Light's launch window. Because Destiny 2 has a content vault, Bungie's ongoing practice of archiving older content to keep the game's install footprint manageable, some seasonal story beats may no longer be accessible in their original form. Check which seasons are still active before purchasing if chasing the narrative is your primary reason for buying. Loot economy under Beyond Light was healthier than the pre-witch-queen era that followed, though sunset gear (Bungie's now-abandoned hard cap on older weapons' max power) caused significant community friction during this period. That system has since been removed, so legacy concerns about gear expiration are mostly resolved. Guild tooling, clan XP, and clan engrams are unchanged from base Destiny 2, functional, not impressive. The game does not have a proper LFG system built in, so raid and dungeon matchmaking still depends on third-party sites like Bungie's own companion app or community boards. For a franchise this old, that remains a puzzling omission. If you are a returning player or someone who has been on the fence about Destiny 2 as a long-term ecosystem commitment, Beyond Light is one of the expansions that made the case for staying. Europa is a genuinely good-looking patrol zone, Stasis subclasses added build variety that the game badly needed, and the Deep Stone Crypt still holds up as a benchmark for what a Destiny raid can be. If you are a brand new player, start with the free base game and the Witch Queen expansion before touching this one, the onboarding story will make more sense. Destiny 2 has outlasted dozens of competitors (RIP Anthem, RIP Babylon's Fall) by doing the core gunfeel better than almost anyone. Beyond Light is a solid chapter in that run. Yuki, Scout Team
