Treyarch's near-future FPS packs a branching campaign, frenetic competitive multiplayer, and a surprisingly deep Zombies mode into one of the series' most content-heavy entries.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 is a first-person shooter set across two time periods: Cold War-era 1980s flashbacks and a near-future 2025 full of drones, optical camo, and quadrupedal mechs. Treyarch made a real structural bet with the campaign by building in genuine branching paths and multiple endings. Your choices during missions, the optional Strike Force side operations, and even objectives you fail quietly shape which of several conclusions you see. That alone makes it more replayable than most shooters, and villain Raul Menendez gives the story a stronger spine than the franchise usually delivers. The competitive multiplayer is where most players will spend the bulk of their time, and the Pick Ten system is the headline mechanical change. Each class gets ten points to distribute across weapons, attachments, perks, and grenades however you like, which opens up genuinely flexible builds. Want a class that is basically just sprint perks and a pistol so you can bank score streaks faster? Go for it. Score streaks themselves replaced kill streaks, rewarding objective play like flag captures and assists rather than just raw kills, which nudges team modes toward better cooperation. Hardpoint, a rotating King of the Hill-style mode, and the returning Kill Confirmed both benefit from that design. The maps lean close-quarters, which keeps SMGs competitive, and the sandbox of near-future support toys, from hacking tools and EMP grenades to a quadrotor drone with a mounted machine gun, keeps rounds chaotic in the best way. Zombies mode got a serious expansion here. Three sub-modes shipped in the base game: Survival (the classic wave-based holdout), Grief (a tense 4-vs-4 where two human teams indirectly sabotage each other while fighting zombies), and TranZit, the sprawling open-world mode where a bus carries you between zombie-infested locations. Up to four players can team up online in TranZit and Survival. It is a legitimate co-op mode in its own right, not just a tacked-on extra. Here is the honest heads-up for anyone buying the PC version: split-screen is a console-only feature. On PC you get dedicated servers and a solid online experience, but if your plan was couch co-op with friends sharing one screen and one machine, that is not on the table here without third-party workarounds. Online Zombies with friends works fine though, which is where you want to be anyway. The campaign's Strike Force missions sound great on paper but the AI pathfinding is rough enough that switching to ground-level control often feels mandatory. It is a messy addition, but the core campaign shooting and set pieces do enough heavy lifting to carry through. For a game released in 2012, Black Ops 2 holds up well as a structured, content-packed shooter. The Pick Ten loadout system influenced the whole genre, the Zombies mode has its own cult following for good reason, and the campaign's multiple endings give it a replay hook most annual shooters never bothered with. If fast, high-TTK competitive shooting with some genuine loadout depth and a strong co-op side mode sounds like your Saturday night, this is still a very solid way to spend it. Riley, Scout Team
