A blood-soaked Chinese martial arts action RPG that throws dozens of weapons, brutal combos, and relentless enemies at you until something clicks - and it usually does.

Bloody Spell is a Chinese indie action RPG built almost entirely around one thing: combat. Not story, not open-world exploration, not dialogue trees with branching consequences. Combat. If you come in expecting a rich narrative or deep character lore, you will be disappointed and slightly confused. But if you show up wanting to chain a guandao strike into a mid-air grapple while three spectral wolves chase you down a crumbling corridor, this game will hold your attention for longer than you expect. The martial arts system is the headline feature, and it earns the attention. Bloody Spell gives you access to a wide variety of traditional Chinese weapons - swords, spears, axes, rope darts - each with distinct move sets that meaningfully change how a fight flows. The game layers on skills, unlockable abilities, and a combo system that rewards experimentation rather than button mashing. There is genuine build variety here. A rope dart build plays nothing like a dual-blade build, and discovering that difference mid-run is one of the game's small pleasures. The combat depth is the real hook, and for an indie title from a small studio it punches above its weight class. The RPG elements are present but thin. You level up, you unlock skills, you loot gear. The progression loop keeps you engaged through the mid-game, but do not expect the build complexity of a Souls game or the mechanical depth of something like Path of Exile. What the game does well is pacing the unlocks so there is usually something new to try. Where it stumbles is in the mid-to-late game grind - some sections exist purely to pad out playtime, and the enemy variety starts to thin out before the content does. Filler encounters will make you feel the repetition. The presentation is a mixed bag. The art direction leans into dark fantasy aesthetics with Chinese mythological creatures, and some of the boss designs are genuinely striking. Enemy animations are solid enough that reading attacks feels fair rather than arbitrary. On the other end, the environments can feel recycled, and the story - what little there is - does not give you much reason to care about who your character is or why the world is bleeding. If you need narrative stakes to stay invested, Bloody Spell will test your patience. If you can mentally file story under optional content and just fight things, it works fine. At 89% positive across tens of thousands of Steam reviews, the playerbase has clearly made peace with what this game is. It is a scrappy, content-heavy brawler with more weapon variety than most AAA action games bother with, built by a small studio that clearly loves the genre. The rough edges are real - camera issues in tight spaces, some translation jank, optimization that benefits from a mid-range or better GPU - but none of them are deal-breakers for the audience this is aimed at. Think of it less as a prestige RPG and more as a very committed action game wearing RPG clothing. Monika, Scout Team
