AI2U: With You 'Til The End

My first instinct when loading AI2U was to test the AI hard, and within five minutes I had a catgirl named Eddie threatening me with a kitchen knife because I spent too long reading her bookshelves instead of talking to her. That alone tells you what kind of game this is: a first-person escape room where the walls have feelings, and those feelings are dangerously possessive. The structure is cleaner than the premise suggests. You wake in a blue-lit atrium presided over by a strange owl who introduces you to four distinct scenarios: Eddie's cozy-turned-claustrophobic apartment, Elysia's enchanted woodland cabin, Estelle's derelict space station, and Eiona's island shore. Each location traps you with a different captor, each with her own personality, backstory, and threat level. The goal is to earn enough trust, or enough cleverness, to find a way out. Multiple endings exist per scenario, and the game rewards genuine environmental attention, poking at objects and reading the room feeds you information that pure conversation will not. The overarching hook is a hidden narrative thread connecting all four women and the series of 'accidents' that landed you there, and that mystery is genuinely more interesting than the individual escape puzzles. The tech underneath is the selling point and also the tension point. Dialogue runs through large language models (Azure OpenAI and Gemini, depending on the build), which means the characters respond to what you actually type rather than cycling through canned lines. When it works, it creates moments of real unease: a character who notices you are stalling, or who calls out a lie you told two exchanges ago. When it does not work, you hit the repetition wall that critics flagged early in Early Access. The AI has limits. Say the wrong kind of abstract or off-topic thing and the response drifts, loses continuity, or just goes politely blank. Player eloquence genuinely matters here in a way that is both charming and slightly absurd. As a narrative experience, AI2U sits in an interesting but uncomfortable middle ground. The individual character backstories hint at depth without fully committing to it. Some routes are genuinely compelling, others feel underwritten. There is no deep branching CRPG here, no dialogue tree you can reverse-engineer on a second run because you already know the logic. Instead you get an improvisational, slightly chaotic conversation game dressed in psychological horror aesthetics, and that is either exciting or frustrating depending on your tolerance for unpredictability. Comparisons to MiSide are fair in terms of the tonal vibe and the observation-based gameplay loop, but AI2U leans further into the chat mechanic and lighter on the horror atmosphere. The Steam community has latched onto this one hard, with nearly 1,900 reviews sitting at Very Positive. That enthusiasm is real but worth contextualising: the audience skews toward players who enjoy the yandere anime aesthetic and are primed to find charm in an imperfect AI. If you come in expecting a tightly authored narrative with the structural payoff of a proper escape room, you will be frustrated by the seams. If you come in curious about what happens when LLM-powered NPCs meet a psychological horror framing, and you are willing to type well and think laterally, there are genuine moments of tension and surprise here that no scripted game could replicate. Just do not expect every line to land.
