Who is the Fire Giant and why you must fight him

The Fire Giant is a mandatory Legend boss and the last survivor of the war against the giants. He guards the flame you need to reach the Forge of the Giants, so you cannot skip him to continue the main story. Defeating him unlocks the Forge, lets you burn the Erdtree's thorns, and teleports you onward to Crumbling Farum Azula.

Expect a long fight. He has a massive health pool and only a handful of usable weaknesses, which is exactly why so many players get stuck here.

How to beat the Fire Giant

  1. Buff before the fog wall. Boost your fire damage negation (an incantation that raises fire defense, or fireproof consumables), then summon a Spirit Ash to pull aggro. A Mimic Tear copies your build, and a tanky teleporting summon also works well to keep his attention off you.
  2. Summon Torrent immediately. This fight is built for horseback. Mounting up lets you close the huge gaps, stay under him, and escape his sweeping ground attacks.
  3. In Phase 1, target his left ankle. That wounded leg is his weak point. Ride in, stay close behind or underneath him, and force him into slow basic swings instead of ranged fire.
  4. Punish the stagger. Slash and Bleed wear him down fast. When he stumbles or kneels, dismount and unload your heaviest damage, then get back on Torrent before he recovers.
  5. Avoid his rolling and AOE attacks. Do not stand at mid range. When he curls into a ball and rolls, or winds up a wide ground slam, ride diagonally out of the path rather than trying to tank it.
  6. Survive the transition cutscene. At roughly half health his leg snaps off and a second face opens on his torso. The arena fills with far more fire.
  7. In Phase 2, hit the foot of his remaining leg. Keep close so he uses melee instead of his fast fireballs. Stay patient, dodge the new fire AOE, and chip away until he drops.

Phase-by-phase breakdown

PhaseTriggerWhere to hitWatch out for
Phase 1Start of fightLeft ankle / wounded legRolling ball attack and wide ground slam AOE; keep moving on Torrent
Phase 2About 50% HP, after the leg-snap cutsceneFoot of the remaining legHeavy fire AOE and fast fireballs; stay close so he cannot spam ranged fire

Bring a build centered on Slash and Bleed, since both are his clearest weaknesses. Dual-wielding fast slashing weapons or a bleed-infused blade lets you stack the bleed bar quickly while the Spirit Ash holds aggro. Scarlet Rot, Poison, and Frostbite also stick to him, so any rot or frost option you already run is a bonus.

Raise fire defense before you commit. An incantation that greatly increases fire damage negation, or fireproof consumables, turns several of his one-shot fire attacks into survivable hits. With 40 Vigor as a floor (60 is the safe target) and weapons at +18 or better, the fight becomes a manageable endurance test rather than a wall.

FAQ

What is the Fire Giant weak to? He is weak to Slash and Bleed, and he can also be worn down with Scarlet Rot, Poison, and Frostbite. He resists Fire and Holy damage and shrugs off most status effects, so do not bring fire weapons.

What level should I be for the Fire Giant? Aim for at least level 110 with weapons upgraded to +18 or higher. Keep Vigor at 40 minimum to avoid getting one-shot, with 60 Vigor as the ideal target for surviving his fire.

Should I fight the Fire Giant on horseback? Yes. Torrent is strongly recommended because the arena is huge and the Giant relies on long-reach sweeps and AOE. Staying mounted lets you close distance, hug his weak leg, and ride out of his rolling and slam attacks.

What do I get for beating the Fire Giant? You earn 180,000 runes and the Remembrance of the Fire Giant. You can hand the Remembrance to Enia at the Roundtable Hold for either the Giant's Red Braid whip or the Burn, O Flame! incantation, or consume it for 30,000 runes.

Where is the Fire Giant located? He waits at Flame Peak in the Mountaintops of the Giants, on the road to the Forge of the Giants. You reach the area using the Grand Lift of Rold from Leyndell and pass Zamor Ruins on the way to his arena.
