Where to find Margit
Margit is the gatekeeper boss standing between you and Stormveil Castle. His fog gate sits inside the Castleward Tunnel, which begins at the top of Stormhill, the windswept lands northeast of the starting area, Limgrave. Although the first encounter is effectively mandatory to push the main story forward, the area around him is full of soldiers and nobles, so clear or sneak past them before you commit to the fight.
Look to the side of the fog gate before you enter. Sorcerer Rogier's golden summon sign appears by the fog gate to the arena, and summoning him is a solid option if you are struggling on your own.
Prep before the fight
- Level your Vigor. Margit's combos hit hard for an early boss, so getting your HP high enough to survive a full string is the single biggest survivability boost.
- Upgrade a weapon. Aim for around +3 using Smithing Stones farmed in the Limgrave area so your damage keeps pace with his health pool.
- Grab Margit's Shackle. It can be purchased from Patches for 5,000 runes in Murkwater Cave after he becomes available as a merchant. It pins Margit briefly twice in Phase 1, but it has no effect in Phase 2.
- Unlock the Spirit Calling Bell. This lets you summon a spirit ash to draw aggro, which makes the fight dramatically easier.
- Bring a status weapon if you can. Bleed and poison both pressure him quickly.
How to beat Margit, the Fell Omen
- Open with your spirit ash or Rogier. Lone Wolves or Spirit Jellyfish are reliable summons, while Rogier adds safe chip damage and stagger chances. The goal is to pull Margit's attention off you so you can attack his back and sides.
- Pop Margit's Shackle early. When he is free in Phase 1, use the Shackle to lock him in place, then unload a few hits before he recovers.
- Wait out his delayed swings. Many of his attacks have a deliberate pause built into the wind-up. Roll late, into the strike, rather than reacting to the first motion of his staff.
- Punish the right openings. Punish after his slow overheads, hammer slams, and turning attacks; jumping heavy attacks and guard counters wear down his stance, so cash in the riposte when it breaks.
- Counter his leaps with thrown items. When he leaps backward, throw Bone Darts or throwing daggers to force him back into close range and keep your pressure going.
- Exploit bleed. Because of his lower resistance to it, you can usually proc Bleed two to three times across the fight if you use a weapon with a faster attack animation.
- Survive the Phase 2 hammer slam. In the second phase Margit summons a large hammer and leaps into the air to slam it down; sprint to the far end of the causeway to avoid it, then weave in hits during the brief window when he is immobile on landing before backing off.
Note that the second phase is a continuation, not a reset. He does not get a renewed HP bar, the damage he takes stays the same in both phases, and his weaknesses do not change.
Phase by phase
| Phase | Trigger | What he does | Your plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phase 1 | Start of fight | Staff swings (some fast, some heavily delayed), a forward staff stab that can chain into dagger slashes, and a summoned lightning sword | Use Margit's Shackle to pin him, roll late into delayed swings, and let your summon hold aggro while you hit his back |
| Phase 2 | Around half health | Keeps Phase 1 moves and adds a summoned hammer with a leaping aerial slam | Shackle no longer works; sprint clear of the hammer slam, then punish the recovery and finish with bleed or slash damage |
Recommended setup
A fast, bleed-capable melee build is the most forgiving route here. A bleed-focused katana or curved sword lets you trigger Hemorrhage during the long openings his delayed attacks create, and slash damage doubles as his physical weakness. He is weak to Slash but strong against Holy, so leave Holy weapons at home for this fight. Pair that with a spirit ash that pulls aggro, keep a chunk of Vigor invested, and slot the Talisman Pouch reward into more offensive or defensive talismans for the rest of Stormveil.
If you prefer to keep your distance, a sorcery or status approach also works: a Spirit Jellyfish can build poison while you keep Margit busy.
