Wildcard cycles rotate salary-cap and player-requirement rules, so your roster decisions actually carry weekly strategic weight rather than just sitting static. The Combinations system, where stacking players by shared team or nationality unlocks Ability Point bonuses and Salary Cap flexibility, adds a layer of build optimization that strategy-minded players will appreciate. NHL Points accelerate that build by letting you buy packs directly, but the free-to-progress loop through Fresh Ice objectives and Shall We Shall Weeks is functional enough that 3,000 Points feels like a supplement rather than a necessity. The ICE-Q 2.0 engine, which pulls from real NHL EDGE tracking data to set per-player attributes like skating acceleration, top speed, slap shot power, and wrist shot power, means the underlying simulation is the strongest it has been. That data-driven attribute system applies to AI-controlled skaters too, so offline play against CPU squads is noticeably more differentiated than in prior years. Be A Pro received its first meaningful overhaul since NHL 21, adding new motion-capture cutscenes, a IIHF World Junior Championship entry point, and voice acting from real NHL players. The community had flagged Be A Pro as a long-standing grievance, and the consensus from early coverage is that the revamp is a genuine improvement, even if the bar coming in was not particularly high. The honest friction point with a Points pack is the expiration problem. NHL Points do not carry over to the next annual release, so any balance sitting in your account when NHL 27 launches is gone. That is not a flaw unique to NHL 26, but it is worth factoring into your purchase timing.
