I went in expecting a straightforward spy thriller and got a genuinely stylish comic-panel shooter instead. XIII wraps its third-person gunplay in cel-shading that still holds up visually, with a narrative framed as comic panels that pop on screen. The art direction is the star here, and it absolutely commits to the bit. But here's the catch: this is a 2003 game through and through. Enemy AI is predictable, level design feels cramped, and the controls lack the snap modern action games spoil us with. If you're hunting for a historical curiosity or grew up on early Xbox action games, XIII's style will carry you through. For everyone else, it's a hard sell unless you specifically want to experience gaming history with personality.
