A phone-armed horror game from 2014 that swings wildly between inspired atmosphere and clumsy execution, but respects your time enough to know when to quit.

I spent three hours with DreadOut expecting another forgettable jump-scare simulator, and instead found something genuinely unsettling hiding beneath its rough edges. Linda's smartphone camera becomes her primary defense against Indonesian-inspired supernatural threats, and the core mechanic works: pointing your flashlight at entities to weaken them before they close the distance creates real tension in tight spaces. The puzzle design is respectful, never obtuse, and the pacing knows restraint. But the controls feel dated, camera clipping betrays the horror atmosphere, and some creature designs are more unintentionally funny than frightening. The Metacritic score of 55 isn't entirely unfair, yet it obscures what matters: this is a handcrafted experience by a small team that trusts its audience to sit in the dark and actually get uncomfortable. If you've tired of AAA horror's hand-holding and jump-cut bombardment, DreadOut's slower-burn approach and cultural specificity offer something different. It's not polished, and it falters in the third act, but it earns the quiet dread it builds. The soundtrack deserves its own praise. Don't expect mastery. Expect character and intentionality in a space where most horror games phone it in. Kai, Scout Team
