Roughly 100 hours of choice-driven space opera where the friends you make in year one can die in year three. If narrative RPGs are your thing, this trilogy is the benchmark.

I have a hard time thinking of another series where a decision made in the first game still stings two sequels later. That is the core trick the Mass Effect Trilogy pulls off, and it pulls it off better than almost anything else in the genre. You build Commander Shepard from scratch, pick a class, and spend the next three games assembling a crew, making calls that ripple forward, and fighting a war against an enemy that genuinely feels insurmountable. The investment compounds the further you go. The three games are not equal in mechanical terms, and that is worth knowing before you start. The first entry is the roughest: cover detection is loose, weapons carry an artificial bloom that makes early gunfights feel random, and the Mako planetary exploration vehicle is the kind of design decision that earns its own reputation. None of it is a dealbreaker, but players expecting the snappy third-person shooting of later BioWare titles will need patience through the opening dozen hours. The second game tightens everything up considerably, leaning harder into action and smoothing out the skill trees, while the third pushes the combat further still at the cost of some RPG depth. Each entry plays noticeably differently, which keeps the full run from feeling monotonous. What holds all three together is the writing. The squad roster across the trilogy features some of the most memorable characters in the medium: Garrus, Tali, Mordin, Wrex. Relationships build slowly and credibly, and the game earns the weight it asks you to carry by the end. Dialogue branches using a Paragon and Renegade alignment system that lets you play Shepard as a diplomat, a bruiser, or something messier in between. Class options at character creation, including Soldier, Adept, Engineer, and hybrid picks like Vanguard and Infiltrator, shape whether you favor raw firepower, biotic crowd control, or tech debuffs, and that choice stays relevant across all three games. The original Trilogy sold on Origin predates the Legendary Edition remaster, so buyers should be clear on what they are getting: the base games without the visual and gameplay polish that the 2021 remaster introduced. The original ME1 in particular shows its age most visibly. If you can get past that, the story architecture is identical and the experience is fully intact. This is the version for players who want the original games as they shipped, not a curated rerelease. Anyone who has never touched the series and can find the Legendary Edition available should probably lean that direction instead for the improved Mako handling alone. Still, the trilogy on any version remains a singular achievement in branching narrative design. It asks you to care about a cast of aliens and soldiers, then spends 80 to 100 hours making good on that ask. Not every quest lands, ME3's late-game RPG simplification frustrates players who came in through the first entry, and the ending of the third game has a well-documented and very loud community history. None of that undoes what the series accomplishes across its run. If you read codex entries, talk to every crew member before every mission, and take your time, this is one of the most rewarding long-form stories games have produced. Alex, Scout Team

Best for players who want a long, choice-heavy sci-fi RPG where the story genuinely compounds across three full games.
