Vendors discount the first term heavily, then renew at full price. Buying a new key from the cheapest store each year instead of auto-renewing typically costs far less for the same protection.

Windows Defender is solid baseline protection. Paid suites add layers (better ransomware defence, firewall, VPN, password manager, identity monitoring). Worth it if you want those extras or protect multiple devices.
