What is Windows 11 Pro?

Windows 11 Pro is Microsoft's primary desktop operating system for power users and professionals. Released in October 2021, it is the successor to Windows 10 and runs on x64 and ARM64 processors. The "Pro" tier sits directly above the consumer-grade Home edition and below the enterprise-focused Windows 11 Pro for Workstations and Education variants. Microsoft continues to develop Windows 11 with regular feature updates delivered through Windows Update.

Windows 11 Pro includes everything in the Home edition — the redesigned Start menu, Snap Layouts for multitasking, DirectStorage for faster game load times on NVMe drives, and integration with Microsoft accounts and OneDrive — plus a meaningful set of tools aimed at advanced users and small businesses:

Licence & activation

Windows 11 Pro keys sold on grey-market and secondary-market platforms are almost always **OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer)** keys, not the retail boxed product Microsoft sells directly. The practical difference matters:

• **OEM keys** are permanently tied to the first machine they activate on. They cannot be transferred to a new PC if you upgrade your hardware. They are cheaper precisely because of this restriction.
• **Retail keys** (sometimes called Full Packaged Product or FPP) can be deactivated and moved to a different machine, making them suitable for users who plan to build a new PC later.

Activation is straightforward: after purchase you receive a 25-character product key by email. During Windows 11 setup (or via Settings → System → Activation on an already-installed system) you enter the key and Microsoft's servers validate it online. No physical media is required; the installation image is downloadable free from Microsoft's website.

Is it worth it?

For most home users who just browse, stream, and game, Windows 11 Home is sufficient. Windows 11 Pro earns its premium over Home if you genuinely need BitLocker encryption (particularly important on portable hardware), Remote Desktop host functionality, or Hyper-V for development and testing workflows.

If you are buying a discounted key from a reseller, treat it as an OEM licence unless the listing explicitly states otherwise. That means the key is locked to one machine for its lifetime — a fair trade at the typical price point, but not comparable to a transferable retail licence. Anyone who upgrades PCs regularly should seek out a confirmed retail key or buy direct from Microsoft.

For businesses managing more than a handful of machines, consider whether Microsoft 365 Business Premium (which includes Windows 11 Pro as a subscription benefit for Intune-managed devices) or a volume licensing agreement offers better long-term value than individual Pro keys.
