What is Windows 10 Pro?
Windows 10 Pro is a professional-tier edition of Microsoft's Windows 10 operating system, released in 2015 and developed by Microsoft. It sits one step above Windows 10 Home and targets power users, small business owners, developers, and IT professionals who need features that Home omits. Microsoft continues to release cumulative security updates for Windows 10 through October 2025, after which mainstream support ends — making this a mature, stable platform still widely used but approaching its end-of-support window.
What's included
Windows 10 Pro includes everything in Windows 10 Home, plus a set of productivity and management tools aimed at professional use:
- **BitLocker drive encryption** — full-disk encryption to protect data if a device is lost or stolen
- **Remote Desktop (host)** — lets you connect to this machine from another device over a network
- **Hyper-V virtualisation** — built-in hypervisor for running virtual machines without third-party software
- **Windows Sandbox** — an isolated, temporary desktop environment for safely running untrusted applications
- **Group Policy management** — centralised configuration control for organisations managing multiple machines
- **Domain Join and Azure AD Join** — connect to corporate Active Directory or Microsoft's cloud identity service
The Home edition lacks BitLocker, Remote Desktop hosting, Hyper-V, and Group Policy — the four features most commonly cited as reasons to step up to Pro.
Licence & activation
Windows 10 Pro keys sold through third-party grey-market key resellers are almost universally **OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer)** licences, not full retail licences — even when the listing does not spell this out. It is worth understanding the distinction:
- **OEM key**: valid for one machine only, permanently tied to the first hardware it activates on. Cannot legally be transferred to a new PC if you upgrade or replace your machine. Cheaper for that reason.
- **Retail key**: transferable. You can deactivate it on one machine and activate it on another. Costs more, but you own the licence across hardware changes.
Activation is straightforward: after purchase you receive a 25-character product key by email. Enter it during Windows Setup or post-installation under Settings → Update & Security → Activation → Change product key. A stable internet connection is required for online activation. No Microsoft account is needed for activation itself, though some features work better with one linked.
Is it worth it?
For home users who do not need BitLocker, Remote Desktop, or virtualisation, Windows 10 Home is functionally sufficient and usually cheaper. If you use Hyper-V for development environments, manage a small office network via Group Policy, or need full-disk encryption on a laptop, Pro pays for itself quickly.
Bear in mind that Windows 10 reaches end of mainstream support in **October 2025**. Security patches will stop after that date unless Microsoft extends coverage. If your hardware supports it, Windows 11 Pro may be the more forward-looking purchase. If your PC does not meet Windows 11's TPM 2.0 and CPU requirements, Windows 10 Pro remains the right current choice — it will continue to function after support ends, though without future security updates.
OEM keys from key resellers are not fraudulent by default, but they carry the machine-lock restriction above. Buy retail if you anticipate changing hardware.

Preguntas frecuentes
Todo Windows & OS →What is the difference between Windows Home and Pro?
Both run every app and game. Pro adds business and power-user features: BitLocker encryption, Remote Desktop (host), Hyper-V virtualisation, Group Policy and domain join. For home and gaming use, Home is enough; choose Pro if you need those specific features.
What is the difference between a Retail and an OEM key?
A Retail key can be moved to a new PC when you replace hardware. An OEM key is cheaper but permanently tied to the first motherboard it activates. Both activate the same Windows — the difference is transferability.
Are these Windows keys genuine?
We compare offers from established key stores. Genuine retail and OEM keys sit in the main comparison; the licence type is labelled on every offer. Always read the offer details for the activation method before buying.
How do I activate Windows with a key?
Install Windows, then go to Settings → System → Activation → Change product key and enter your key. Some OEM keys use phone activation — the store provides instructions.
Why is the same Windows key cheaper here?
Stores compete on digital licence prices and run different regional and OEM deals. We surface the lowest live price across every store we track so you do not overpay versus buying direct.
