Frank West packed more personality into a zombie-infested mall than most games manage in an entire open world. If the ticking clock doesn't stress you out, the Psychopath bosses will.

I keep coming back to Dead Rising because it does something almost no other action game bothers to attempt: it makes time itself the hardest enemy in the room. You play as Frank West, a freelance photojournalist dropped into a quarantined Colorado town whose shopping mall has gone very, very wrong. The 72-hour in-game clock runs in real time whether you are sprinting across Willamette Mall or standing still reading a map, and that pressure shapes every decision you make. Do you detour for a survivor, grab a better weapon from the sporting goods store, or push straight to the next story case? The tension that creates is almost entirely absent from modern open-world games, and it is the engine that makes the whole thing tick. The core loop is deceptively deep. Weapons break, so you are always improvising, and the mall is generously stocked with improvised options ranging from a park bench to a lawnmower to the infamous mini chainsaws that, combined with the right magazines, become borderline unstoppable. Inventory management matters more than it looks at first glance. PP (the game's XP system) rewards both kills and survivor rescues, and leveling Frank up unlocks new moves that genuinely change how you handle crowd control. The Psychopath boss fights are a different beast entirely, requiring actual pattern recognition rather than button-mashing, and they hit a difficulty spike that will catch first-timers off guard. Expect to die, restart with your earned level intact, and go again better prepared. The PC port itself is in solid shape. The frame rate can be unlocked, it runs cleanly at high resolutions, and full controller support is there for anyone who wants it (keyboard and mouse works too, though mouse acceleration is a minor annoyance). The visuals carry their age openly, with low-resolution textures and some stiff NPC animation, but the mall itself is colourful and dense enough that you stop noticing within the first hour. A small number of players have reported occasional save corruption and rare crashes, so manual saves before major story beats are a sensible habit. These are edge cases, not systemic problems, but worth flagging. Who is this actually for? Players who like games that demand a degree of planning alongside the chaos, who are comfortable with the idea that a first run might end in failure and that failure is part of the design. The story is pulpy and satirical in a way the series gradually abandoned, and the writing has more to say about American consumerism than the cover art suggests. If you bounced off it in 2006 because the save system felt punishing, the PC version is the same underlying game, so prepare accordingly. If you have never touched the series, this is still the sharpest entry. Alex, Scout Team
