I went in hoping the reboot would capture even half the anarchic energy of Saints Row: The Third, and came out with something more complicated than a simple thumbs up or thumbs down. The 2022 Saints Row is a third-person open-world shooter set in Santo Ileso, a sprawling fictional desert city carved into nine districts, and on paper it has everything the series is known for: guns, absurd side hustles, Criminal Ventures that let you build your gang's empire through increasingly chaotic business missions, and a fully customizable player character nicknamed the Boss. The bones are recognizable. The flesh, unfortunately, is uneven. The things that work are worth naming. Gunplay is functional and comfortable, especially with a controller in hand, and the sheer density of things to do in Santo Ileso means boredom takes a while to set in. The Criminal Ventures system, where you acquire and grow illegal businesses through side missions, is a decent loop when it clicks. An insurance fraud activity that has you hurling yourself into traffic for payout is the kind of stupid fun that keeps the series distinct. Two-player online co-op lets a friend drop into your campaign and both players keep their own progress, which is genuinely well-implemented and the best reason to own this if you have a willing partner in crime. The things that don't work are harder to overlook at full price. The new cast of Saints was polarizing from the moment it was revealed, and after spending time with them, the critique lands. They read more like roommates navigating rent stress than criminals building an empire, and the writing rarely gives them room to grow beyond their surface quirks. The story itself lacks the satirical edge that made earlier entries memorable, playing it safe in ways that flatten the comedy. Mission design leans heavily on templates, and the open world, despite its size, can feel sparse in ways that become noticeable once the novelty wears off. Technical bugs were a launch-window problem widely reported across platforms, and while patches addressed some issues over time, the game shipped rougher than it should have for a major release. Long-time fans of the series are the most likely to feel the sting here. If Saints Row 2 or The Third are your benchmark, this reboot moves the needle in the wrong direction on story and character, even while keeping the core sandbox loop intact. If you're newer to the series, or you're specifically hunting a co-op open-world game to play with a friend who doesn't need narrative depth to have a good time, the floor is genuinely higher than the review scores suggest. It also carries the weight of being Volition's final game before the studio closed, which gives the whole experience a melancholy aftertaste that has nothing to do with its quality as a game.
