RimWorld: Ideology
If RimWorld's late-game ever started feeling like colony maintenance on autopilot, Ideology is the expansion that puts a genuine belief system in the driver's seat and refuses to let you coast.
GamerScout Verdict
Essential for colony storytellers who want their late-game decisions to carry cultural weight, skippable for pure combat and survival runs.

Every store in this table quotes us in euros, so the EUR figure is the price the seller actually set, not our arithmetic — which is why EUR is also the currency we rank in. We only list an offer here when the store gives us its price in euros, so nothing in this table is a number we invented.
Pick USD, PLN, GBP, CAD or AUD in the header and we convert from EUR at the European Central Bank reference rate — converted amounts are prefixed with ~. Your bank or the store may apply a different rate at checkout. We never hide offers based on where you are: everyone sees this whole table.
We may earn a commission when you buy games through links on this page — at no extra cost to you. It never affects our rankings or verdicts.

About RimWorld: Ideology
I've restarted more RimWorld colonies than I care to admit, and the pattern was always the same: brilliant chaos in the early game, then a slow flattening once survival was locked in. Ideology is Ludeon's direct answer to that problem, and it works better than I expected. By wrapping every colonist in a shared belief system called an ideoligion, built from one to four core memes, the expansion turns your colony's culture from background flavor into a live mechanical variable that touches food, apparel, violence, technology preferences, and social friction every single day. The ideoligion builder is where the real depth lives. You can hand-craft a fixed belief system from scratch or go fluid, which means your beliefs can actually evolve mid-run as you accumulate development points through rituals, relic hunts, and other ideology-driven actions. Fluid mode is the smarter long-term choice: when your pirate cannibals eventually decide they feel strongly about transhumanism too, you can fold that into the doctrine rather than live with precept mismatches. Social roles add another layer: your colony will need a leader, a moral guide, and skill specialists, each with mood bonuses and expectation costs that force you to actually weigh the trade-offs rather than just slot your best pawns into jobs. The mood management system gets meaningfully more complex here, but also more engaging, with ritual outcomes and role abilities opening up levers that vanilla simply does not have. Relic hunting is the expansion's best new mid-game driver. Multi-part quests send your pawns into procedurally generated ancient complexes full of threats that interact with each other in ways that feel emergent rather than scripted. You can wake sleeping ancient soldiers to help you fight off rival raiders, or ignite a fuel node to clear out a nest of insects blocking your path to the prize. Bringing a relic back to your reliquary attracts pilgrim visitors and accelerates conversion of prisoners and recruits. It gives the mid-game the kind of active objective structure that vanilla's storyteller-driven pressure alone sometimes cannot sustain. The expansion also adds the Archonexus as a new win condition, giving late-game colonies a grand strategic target beyond simple escape-pod survival. Where Ideology earns its criticisms is in the up-front complexity. The ideoligion editor at game start can overwhelm anyone who has not yet internalized vanilla's mood system. Preset options like the mole people or classic-like configurations lower the barrier, but a new player picking this DLC alongside the base game will spend their first run reading tooltips more than actually playing. Veterans will find that the expansion's balance is not always clean either: social role expectations can generate stubborn mood penalties early in a colony's life when your pawn count is still thin, and the conversion system can create internal friction that spirals faster than you can manage it if your wardens are not keeping up. These are design tensions, not bugs, but they will punish players who treat ideology setup as a box-checking exercise rather than a strategic decision. For simulation-minded players who care about why their colony behaves the way it does, Ideology is the expansion that turns RimWorld into a proper narrative machine. If your reason for playing is base-building efficiency and combat optimization, look at Royalty first. But if you want every feast, execution, and skylantern festival to mean something mechanically, this is where that lives.
