GamerScout Verdict
Fresh puzzle-combat mechanics and charming presentation make this a standout Switch adventure, even if the story is lighter than classic Paper Mario.

About Paper Mario: The Origami King
I went in expecting another Mario RPG and walked out pleasantly surprised by how much Origami King commits to its gimmick. The ring-puzzle system sounds gimmicky on paper (pun intended), but rotating concentric rings to line up enemies for attacks creates genuine tactical depth that stays engaging across the 20-hour campaign. The paper-craft art direction is gorgeous, and the writing leans into absurdist humor that lands more often than not. Weakness: the ring puzzles can feel repetitive by hour 15, and the story doesn't have the emotional weight some fans wanted from a Mario RPG. If you're after turn-based party combat like the original Paper Mario, this isn't it. But if you want a colorful, mechanically inventive adventure that respects your time, Origami King delivers.
