HELLDIVERS is a hardcore, cooperative twin-stick shooter set in a gloriously satirical sci-fi universe. You play as one of Super Earth's elite shock troops, dropping onto alien worlds to complete objectives for three hostile factions while a community-driven galactic campaign ticks away in the background. It wears its Starship Troopers inspiration openly and leans hard into the absurdity of "managed democracy" propaganda, right down to cheerful in-mission shouts about liberty. Think Magicka in space, with guns and orbital strikes instead of spell combos. The core loop is tighter than it looks. Each mission sends your squad into enemy territory to hit one to four objectives, from capturing hold points to activating terminals with button-combo inputs, before scrambling to an extraction zone while the landing timer bleeds out and reinforcements swarm the LZ. Enemy patrol AI actively hunts you, and if a patrol spots your squad, a cascade of reinforcements starts snowballing almost immediately. Stealth and aggression both have a role, which keeps missions from feeling like pure chaos even when they absolutely become chaos. The stratagem system is the real hook: before dropping in, you equip up to four loadout slots with support items, from orbital airstrikes and turrets to the EXO-48 Obsidian Exosuit and the EXO-51 Lumberer mech. You trigger them mid-mission by inputting directional sequences, and yes, you will absolutely fumble the combo while bugs are eating your face. It is funny every time. Now, the big honking caveat that anyone considering this needs to hear: friendly fire is always on, without exception. Drop pods, turrets, mechs, and your own teammates' rifles will all kill you without hesitation. The Commando Pack's homing anti-tank launcher tracks friends just as enthusiastically as enemies. This is not a bug, it is the entire personality of the game. A good group of friends who can laugh about a badly placed airstrike will have an absolute blast. Random online strangers are a different story, and the PC version's server stability has historically been a sore point with some players. Four players on a couch or a coordinated Discord group is where this thing really sings. Solo play is possible but the higher difficulties push from "tough" to "genuinely miserable" pretty fast. The Digital Deluxe Edition bundles in the Dive Harder Edition plus the Commando, Defenders, and Demolitionist packs (among others), which add weapons like the MG-105 Stalwart LMG, the REC-6 Demolisher C4, the MLS-4X Commando homing launcher, and additional stratagems and cosmetics. The Dive Harder Edition itself added the Proving Grounds mode, new difficulty tiers beyond the base HELLDIVE setting, a favorites and random loadout system, and several extra stratagems including the MGX-42 Machinegun. It is a substantial content set compared to buying base game and DLC separately, and the variety it adds to your stratagem roster genuinely matters at higher difficulties. Mission variety will still feel repetitive eventually, but with the full DLC suite in hand, the loadout customisation adds enough session-to-session variety to keep runs feeling different. If you are already eyeing Helldivers 2 and want to understand the DNA, or if you want a couch co-op game that rewards tight coordination and punishes complacency with increasingly ridiculous deaths, this is a very good time.
