Stamina bars, drafting lines, and mid-race rain forcing a gear change: if that sounds like a good time, Cyanide's annual cycling sim has your number. Everyone else should think twice.

I went in expecting a dressed-up cycling mini-game and came out genuinely respecting what this series is trying to do. Tour de France 2026, developed by Cyanide Studio and published by Nacon, is a proper simulation that treats professional cycling as the chess match it actually is. Winning is not about hammering the sprint button from the gun. Victory depends on reading the peloton, conserving stamina across a full 21-stage route, managing drafting positions, and deciding exactly when to launch a breakaway without burning your protected rider too early. The game scales each stage to roughly a fifth of its real-world distance, so individual races land somewhere between 30 minutes and an hour, which is a sensible concession to playability without gutting the tactical core. The headline addition this year is dynamic weather, and it earns its billing more than most annual-release bullet points do. A stage that opens under clear skies can close in heavy rain, and the handling difference on slippery descents is real enough to change your line choices. Riders even adapt their kit automatically, swapping to arm warmers and long cycling shorts when conditions turn cold or wet, which is a small detail that adds up to a more believable race atmosphere. The new Team Time Trial mode, kicking off from the Grand Depart in Barcelona, layers in a different kind of pressure: you set the relay order, protect your team leader, and synchronize pace across seven riders, with the leader's time locked in the moment they cross the finish line. It is the most mechanically interesting addition the series has seen in a while. The expanded calendar, now including races like the Muscat Classic and Paris-Tours alongside the main Tour, gives you more to work with outside the central event. Where things get complicated is everywhere the simulation niche runs up against a general audience. The AI is sharper than previous entries and will attack on climbs, manage its own fatigue in heat, and behave unpredictably enough to keep single-player interesting. But the learning curve is steep and genuinely unforgiving for newcomers. Casual players will struggle not because the controls are obscure but because the game expects you to think several kilometres ahead at all times. The commentary loops noticeably after the first few stages, the visuals show a consistent gap between the sharp rider models and the softer background environments, and reviewers across the board have flagged that this series probably does not justify a yearly cadence given how incremental the improvements remain. For the player who already watches Grand Tour coverage and wants to feel what it is like to manage energy across a mountain stage while rain starts sheeting down, this is the closest thing on PC to that experience right now. The modes, from Race and Club Tour through to Pro Team and Pro Leaders, give you enough structural variety to sink serious hours in. Steam reviews are sitting at mostly positive but with a mixed recent trend, which tracks: the series faithful are satisfied, but the game is not doing much to recruit new riders. If cycling tactics genuinely interest you, the payoff when a carefully planned attack clicks into place is hard to find elsewhere in sports games. Alex, Scout Team

Committed cycling fans get a deeper, weather-driven sim worth owning; casual players will stall on the steep tactical learning curve.
