A one-hour walking sim that looks like a moving storybook and plays like an unfinished rough draft - worth picking up only if the art and soundtrack matter more to you than actual gameplay depth.

My first instinct with Shelter 3 was to give it the benefit of the doubt. Might and Delight built real emotional capital with the badger and lynx entries, and a game about leading an elephant matriarch through savannah, bamboo forests, and scorching deserts sounded like a natural, ambitious next step. After finishing it - twice, to make sure I wasn't being unfair - I can tell you the concept is doing far more work than the execution. The structure is linear with a branching-path illusion. At each checkpoint, you step into a dreamlike interlude and pick between two routes represented as constellations in the sky, choosing between, say, staying near crocodile-patrolled waters or risking a food-scarce desert crossing. In practice the route choice barely reshapes the run: you are still walking slowly to the next food tree, headbutting it to knock down fruit, watching a stamina bar, and gathering herd members who have wandered off. That loop - walk, eat, gather, repeat - is genuinely all there is for most of the runtime. You play as Reva, a young mother now responsible for the whole herd following the elder matriarch's decline, and you are also responsible for nursing your calf, which halts forward momentum every few minutes. Sprint is available but burns stamina fast enough that using it carelessly can kill a herd member to starvation, so you mostly trudge. The predator roster is thin: crocodiles in a river crossing that you simply wait out, and a tiger encounter in one isolated section that requires you to huddle the herd at specific spots. Compared to the dynamic stalking predators in Shelter 2, it reads as a placeholder system that never got finished. The lack of herd personality is the biggest missed opportunity. Each elephant has a visually distinct quilted skin pattern, and calves share their mother's markings - a genuinely lovely design touch. But those individuals never develop any behavioral quirks. Losing a herd member registers as a resource loss rather than a narrative gut-punch, which undercuts the entire emotional premise the series was built on. The path-choice mechanic promises meaningful consequence; the game never delivers on it. Where it does land: the art direction and soundtrack are legitimately strong. The low-polygon models wrapped in storybook textile textures create an otherworldly look that holds up in screenshots and in motion. The score by Retro Family shifts from ambient calm to something more urgent during danger sections with enough nuance to carry scenes the gameplay cannot. If you mute the game and just watch it, you might think it was extraordinary. The whole run clocks in around 60 to 90 minutes, so at least the disappointment is brief. For players coming in cold with no series history, Shelter 3 is a gentle, visually interesting walking sim with light survival stakes and a short emotional story arc. For fans of Shelter 1 or Shelter 2, it is a regression in almost every mechanical dimension - reduced predator complexity, stripped-back wildlife interaction, and a herd dynamic that never develops the maternal bond the series made its name on. If you are curious about the franchise, start with one of the earlier entries first. Shelter 3 is honestly best approached as a deeply discounted add-on to a series bundle rather than a standalone purchase. Diego, Scout Team
